Webcam default resolution

I know this probably isn't the best site/forum for this question but it's the best I could think of. Also the group here are some of the most resourceful I know.

I'm am trying to use a Logitech Quickcam Pro to take ID Photos using a WDM video interface program. This software doesn't have an option to save the video resolution. On WinXP the capture defaults to 320x240, and Win7 it defaults to 640x480.

Does anyone know of any tricks I can use to default the capture at a lower level to 1600x1200? I was looking for registry keys but can't find anything. I'm open to modifying the driver INF files or what ever need to be done. This is only for 2 dedicated computers so it wouldn't be hard to deploy, and there are no conflicts to worry about.

Both the software vendor and Logitech have let me down and said this default cannot be set.

Also strange is that the resolution drop down actually reads "1600x1200 (default)", but as I said it doesn't default to that.

Try using that device in VirtualDub.
If you attempt to set this to capture from the webcam @ 1600x1200,
VirtualDub will tell you if such resolution is or is not
actually supported by the camera.

I've used virtualdub many times, and indeed have already tested with it. However every time I reopen virtualdub I need to reset the 1600x1200 resolution.

most sensors are between 352x288, 640x480 up to 1280x720 - other resolutions are produced at driver - 1600x1200 it is probably interpolated form 640x480

This camera claims to be a 2megapixel. And at the 1600x1200 setting it only allows 5fps. But seeing at I want a single still photo that is plenty.

If it is an interpolated image I would still much rather use that than what the software program does with a 640x480 photo. The difference is like night and day. It's like if you take this smiley:) and expand it to 640x480. The cropped id picture with the low default resolution look that bad. But when i set it to 1600x1200 it comes out nice and clean, like a proper still camera.

For this setup the image size and quality is more important than the video fps. Perhaps I can replace this camera with one of the new c910 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104385)'s that claim to have full 30 fps HD video. Maybe that will default to the higher resolution at the same source 30fps.

IMO hardware resampling is always limited - if You need interpolated resolution use AVS with proper plugin (NNEDI3/EEDI3?)
