hello
I'm trying to compress an AVI source (from a Digital camera) on Windows 7 (x86). That avi has the following specifications
Audio
Bit Rate 64 Kbps
Audio sample size 8 Bit
Audio format CCITT u Law
Video
640x480
8000 Hz Compressed Mono
Frame rate 30 frames/sec fps
DATA Rate 10501 kbps
Video sample size 24 bit
Video Compression FFDS
pixel aspect Ratio: Square Pixels 1.0
File Size
1.88 GB
I'm using AutoGK 2.55 for compressing it to 1/4 CD file size. During the compression, AutoGK terminates unexpectedlly while resulting the, attached, log file.
What is the probable cause for this problem?
Thank you.

The type of audio in the original AVI is not supported by AutoGK. It only supports AC3, DTS, MPA and some uncompressed audio.
Assuming you have the correct codec for playing the video installed, AutoGK should convert the AVI if you deselect the audio and convert the video only. Of course you'll have to convert the audio a different way and manually add it to the AVI AutoGK produces.

Do you know of any other program besides AutoGK, AutoMKV & HDC (Apparently, These all have failed to recognize this audio type)?
That'd be a lot helpful. Thanks.

Sounds like you don't have the required audio codec installed on your system.
Perform a Googlesearch for "CCITT u Law + codec" (OMIT the quotation marks)...

I ran a google search for that and I found out that the codec pack for it is out dated/obsolete and CCITT u-Law codecs aren't available anywhere.
However, win 7 plays that source avi file, in WMP12, quite efficiently and I wonder whether it has the codecs installed by default. But compression seems impossible.
What to do now?

Demux the audio from the Video. Feed AutoGK an audioless video. When it gets done mux the audio back in.
Or (and I haven't tried this but it should work, and it's what yetanotherid suggested), deselect the audio (uncheck the box) under Step 2. That way AutoGK should ignore the audio. You'll still have to mux it into the video when done.

Well, I had tried only this method and it's the same as doing the VirtualDub's job manually I guess. Though, its delivering the same thing as I wanted but I want things to be done automatically as it used to be with AutoGK.
I think I should try to run these softwares with another machine or refresh my OS (rather downgrading it to Windows XP). I think a fresh installation of pre-requisites will do some trick. :)
Thanks for your help guys. I really appreciated it!:thanks:

Unfortunately I don't think that'll help. For instance I can play AAC audio fine with my PC but if I tried to convert an AVI containing AAC audio with AutoGK it'll fail with the same unsupported audio type error message. Unfortunately with AutoGK you're limited to the few audio types it supports.
I think ffdshow includes a decoder for the problem audio, although I'm pretty sure it's disabled by default. If you have ffdshow try enabling that audio type, then maybe try converting with a program which will decode via directshow. I'm pretty sure MeGUI has a "force directshow decoding" option when setting up audio encoding.
