Hi,
I have encoded some 1280x720p50 + ac3 videos strictly by the instruction here:

Because of the "--b-pyramid strict" settings the final ref frames was 5.

Then I made a Blu-ray authoring using multiAVCHD.
The disk plays nicely on PlayStation 3 but there are problems playing it on my PC - using PowerDVD8. In high bitrate scenes the video looks disturbed (hard to describe how it looks, but it looks bad).
Funny thing - the .m2ts files themselves can be played on PowerDVD8 with no problems (that is - in file mode, even straight from the BD disk I burnt).
So I guess this is PowerDVD issue... But what I'm trying to learn to do is maximum compatibility BD video disks, and I'm afraid I need to take this popular Blu-ray softplayer under account.
Do you know anything about max ref frames limits for PowerDVD8? Is it possible that this is lower then the Blu-ray standards describe? http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=154533
What do I lose going down with this setting from --ref 6 to --ref 3? Do I lose anything at all? As far as I understand ref frames - setting it higher can produce better compression (smaller files) with the same quality or slightly better quality with the same bitrate. But I use very high bitrates anyway (I don't need to worry about file sizes).
P.S. It's probably not related but there are also some problems with sound during "disk-mode" playback in PowerDVD8. It gets kind of boosted up beyond the overdrive limit. And just like the video problem - it does not happen when playing the .m2ts files individually. I don't get it.
