I can't seem to find any informative reviews on these programs. Can anyone explain these services to me?

I know that satellite TV hacking is a big underground industry, but every few years, the entire system changes. Hacking DirecTV used to be the most popular form of underground TV, but that ended in the early 2000s. Since then, FTA hacking took charge, in which Dish Network and other popular satellite services (but not DirecTV) were being hacked. But I do believe that even FTA might be on its way out (or so some people have said).

So, is this satellite on PC thing the next form of underground TV hacking? Does it provide the same channels that you'd see on cable or satellite TV (ie, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, History Channel, etc), or is it more of a YouTube and JustinTV type of thing, where random people make up their own channels?

You're talking about softwares that allow you to watch streams on the internet. It's low quality son.
There is one i know Chris tv online which is not free lots of channels but low quality.
Then you have true sat channels hacking (it tend to be rare these days because there are new, better protections) or cardsharing (someone share his valid card on a server so you can watch sat channels with your sat card (or cable card) some are free and most are not plus it's illegal indeed

While I'm confused about the subject-matter you want details, I think I can safely direct you to a satellite forum, they should know better, doom9 is according to its own words THE in-place to be for everyone interested in DVD conversion. Also wiki might give you a hand ...

Internet card sharing is the best way to gain access to different providers at least in Europe. Software emulation is dead. Again, in Europe.
For this you need a linux box such as dreambox.
