Which CRF values?

I have been looking all over the net and there seems to be many different values for DVD or HD.

I have seen 16/18 suggested for DVD and 20 for bluray, does this sound about right? I have done a few tests on a few of the
dvds i have 18 looks a bit rough around the edges, where as 16 looks only slightly better.

What values do you use?

just know how CRF works, that goes like
the lower the CRF value the higher the quality but bigger the filesize
the higher the CRF value the lower the quality but lower the filesize

in CRF resolution affects the filesize too, suppose you encode a file at 480p and another file encoded at 720p and both of this files are encoded at CRF = 16
the lower output resolution the lower the filesize, so 480p at CRF=16 will have lower filesize
the higher output resolution the higher the filesize, so 720p at CRF=16 will have bigger filesize

as for what values to use, CRF is mainly subjective quality so if CRF=16 is good to your eyes then use that in all your encodes

and oh i almost forgot use --preset veryslow at all times if you want quality encoding

I use crf 19 but its a personal preference really. Test out different values and pick the one with best quality/filesize ratio in your opinion.

I second that. Keep in mind that CRF value can be floating point also, not only integer. If CRF=16 has acceptable visual quality but filesize/bitrate seems too high to you and CRF=17 is too bad OTOH then you may try CRF=16.5 for instance ;)
