View Full Version : Setting Up a Network with WD TV LIVE PLUS

Hi. There are several people living in my household, each of us with our own computer station, but we never learned how to set up a home network. Now that I have my WD TV LIVE PLUS (WDTVLP), I'm very interested in setting up a network.

Here is the home connection:

The house gets internet through a modem. The modem feeds a linksys router. The router feeds two PC desktops via Ethernet cable, and one Mac laptop via wireless connection. The router also feeds my WDTVLP via Ethernet.

Here is what I noticed:

On my Mac, under my "Shared" section, there is a device called "WDTVLIVE." This folder is only accessible when (1) my WDTVLP is connected to the router and when (2) a storage device (e.g., USB flash drive) is connected to my WDTVLP. When this is the case, through my Mac, I can enter the USB flash drive device and delete/add any content I want. However, this occupies the space available on the USB flash drive.

QUESTION #1 - Can all of the other computers in the house access this USB device as well? I presume they can. If so, how can I choose to enable/disable the ability for other computers to access the attached device (other than detaching the device)?

QUESTION #2 - Through my WDTVLP, is it possible for me to access the content from other computers within the house? I presume that I should be able to do this (but can probably only access files in their "Shared" folders), but I don't know how.

QUESTION #3 - In my WDTVLP, I go to Video > Network Shares > USER-PC > a sign-in page. What is this whole process? I presume that this is the method of solving my Question #2, but I don't know how to get passed the sign-in page. The "Account" and "Password" are nothing that I can think of. Am I supposed to set these up, or based on how my house is wired up with internet, should there already be an appropriate set of sign-in info?

Thanks.
