I'm using XMpeg and Divx 4.02. I've followed the guide on this site down to the last detail, but whenever I go to "Start Conversion" I get this error:
FlasKMPEG Warning:
An error occured when trying to generate the file.
Check that you're not using the output file or the program is setup correctly.
What do I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is caused by previous install of radium mp3 codec.
I had this same problem and in Xmpeg website from, which is in fench or some other language, I found out how to fix this problem.
First u uninstall your radium mp3 codec's and what ever mp3 codecs you have. Then do regedit(registry edit) and search for all strings referring to the radium codec(hint: search for l3co). The delete all references and install radium or other mp3 codecs again. U should be fine.
Hope this helps!

That doesn't seem to work. Maybe I did it wrong, but I'm still getting the same error.:(

I don't think this problem can be attributed to the Radium codec.
I think its either trying to overwrite a file mistakingly or you need to re-set your divx 4.12 parameters with a NEW text file.
The radium codec doesn't even come into play in the first pass, it checks it on completion of the first pass starting the second pass. Because all the first pass does it record valuable information on the high value points, lows, etc and stores it in a .txt file. Then on the second pass, it uses thos values to change the codec accordingly (assuming you have the appropriate values also for your 2nd pass settings [i.e. quantitizer values etc]).
I hope this helps you .

How exactly do you re-set the parameters? And if this doesn't work, any more ideas?

You must delete the file that you told the first pass to save its settings in. You can see where this is by going to your first pass settings and see where the log is. Delete it as well as any analyze.log files (only if they have video information) as they contain video info.

I just tried it, and it still doesn't work. :( Any more ideas? I also checked my .log file, and there is nothing in it. There are also no analyze files.

Goto this link and see what they have to say.
This forum is in french. So if you don't understand french use some translation package.

..please post the details.
Chipzoller/SnLnc - I've recently started having the same problem. I am using the Radium codec, but it has never given me problems in the past. I've removed all log and analyze files. The problem started after a failed divx 4.11 encoding session.
I like to look at the bright side though.. at least this problem has forced me to start learning how to use the Gordon Knot package, which I've been meaning to do for a little while now.

I have had the same problem with both Flaskmpeg and Xmpeg.
It has also followed me on 3 different sytstems / OS and combinations of. It is really pissing me off.
But does suggest that i am doing somthing stupid!!!!!!
The radium codec is a factor in some of the cases but not others.
I did find that the radium codec uninstalled itself yesterday ? and i did get xmpeg to run once! but not the next time. then i reinstalled raduim.
My current setup is:
Windows XP, Athlon XP.
radium codec12, Divx4.12, Xmpeg42a, smartripper296.
I am using smartripper to extract the mpeg2 amd english ac3 streams only to the vob, and then using Xmpeg to do a standard 1 pass divx with mp3 sound. (I want 128-192kbps sound so need radium or Lame).
I have changed as few setting as possible to try and make this work.
The output file is to a second hard drive(NTFS) containing only the system pagefile. if a file is created by a failed attempt i delete it.
Is there anything here which is blatantly obvious as wrong.
Also if this radium codec is causing such problems, what are the alternatives eg.lame. i have got a lameACM file which looks like it does the job but i dont know how old it is or where it came from.

Hmm.
I have dealt with this problem.
It seems that on a lot of the situations, people are using SmartRipper.
I don't use this. I use CladDVD 2.0.
I would suggest trying this. It may not work still, but so far, this Smartripper is a common factor.

I have the same problem. In both Xmpeg and Flask 0.6
My current setup is:
Windows 2000 pro, Intel 800MHz.
radium codec12, Divx4.12, Xmpeg42a, DVD Decrypter 3.0.0.11
Haven't tried Clad... yet!

...just to follow up...
I tried encoding the same files using Gordon Knot (as described in the doom9 guides) and it worked like a charm. I also use DVD Decrypter, so I'm guessing it probably isn't due to the way the files were ripped.

It has definatly got nothing to do with smartripper.
same thing happens with CladDVD DVDecrypter ect, no patterns.
although some DVDs do seem to cause the problem, maybe in conjuction with smartripper.
now sound is involved as I can somtimes get it to run without sound, and sometimes with lameACM.
But i can also run with radiumMP3 and Microsoft MPEG 4! not that i would want to.
maybe it is down to the radium codec and I am just having trouble getting rid of it. this seems to be the case as i have managed to run it without radium, with settings that have never worked before.
I think that the reason a lot of people seem to have the same problem is that a lot of unrelated problems are producing the same error.
maybe the Xmpeg developers should be giving us a little more information when something goes wrong, instead of this generic error.
what is the best guide to using another program (Vdub is mentioned a lot) for DVD to DivX, its either that or rebuild my system again.

I have exactly the same problem here as the guy in the first post.
Athlon XP 1600+, Windows XP Professional, Xmpeg 4.2a, divx 4.12, radium mp3 codec.
This is really pissing me off. The only reason I haven't gone to GKnot is it looks incredibly complicated.

hmm.. maybe i can help.. i use to have this same problem a lot of you are having.. i am at skool right now so i cant really check out my settings.. but there was another similar post regarding this issue.. and it was just right under your noses.. heh..
anyways..
i managed to fix this error (as well as others by doing the following)
uninstalling all divx codecs.. followed by installing divx 3.11.. then divx 4.12.. then installing watever mp3 codec , i assume the radium mp3 codec.. and everything should work..
go here for more details.

First you must instal the old 3.22 codec, then do restart the pc
and then instal the latest 4.12 codec
this is solved my problem with output error !!!
best regards

Trust me. If you can run Xmpeg or Flask, you can run Gordianknot....and the results are so much better.
Take me. I have little clue about how to run Nandub and SBC on my own....(I am learning though). Gknot makes the whole process automated.
Check it out.

I just spent 6 hours learning GKnot and encoding The Fast and the Furious in a test. It works great- my only problem with it is the simple fact that the version of FlasK that Gknot uses doesn't have the (better) SSE support that XMpeg incorporates, so my Athlon XP isn't used to its full potential. Aside from that, it works really well. No audio sync problems, great detail (almost looks like the full DVD on a computer screen, sounds great).

Huh?
Gknot doesn't use Flask to encode...it uses Virtualdub or Nandub, depending on which codec (3.11 or 4.xx) you choose.
I think you mean the optimizations that Xmpeg has....that's true, Nandub isn't optimized for AMD yet....someday!

Yeah... whoops... it is Virtualdub (Which I have also used before to compress my home videos from my video capture). Duh.

YEEES!! Thanks EuGeNiLe and everyone else who came up with the solution.
I uninstalled all codecs and installed 3.11 => 4.12 => Fraunhofer Radium 1.263 and now Xmpeg works!!!

I have had the same problem mentioned in this thread...and out of some blundering...i fixed it, heres how. I have 3 computers ..2 of them with the problem(error in xmpeg writing output file) ...one without...come to find out (some may disagree but it worked for me) If u just installed the radium codec and the divx4, as the guide tells you, U get the error. Now if your computer had the divx3 codec installed previously you wont. All i had to do was uninstall the radium codec and install the divx3.11 alpha install. apparently it has its own audio codec that works with this problem. I might just be guessing here, but it was the only difference between these 3 machines. And so far..this fix has made them both work.:D

Well, I solved it this week too, after a new install of Windows 2000 (after several experiments the last installation was in very bad shape). I installed the Divx 4.12 codec, then Xmpeg 4.12 and then the Radium MP3 codec, and voilą, it works.
I left it tonight compressing "Deep Impact" and the final quality is amazing (1 disc only, 767 kbps video, 112 kbps audio). In most part of the movie is difficult to se the difference between this and the DVD.
I suposse it depends on the movie, as with other of similar length the quality was a little poorer. As I'm not in a hurry and usually leave the computer compressing all night, I use Miha's Reference IDCT, SSE Bicubic filtering and no resizing, just cropping.
