Problem Ripping My First DVD

I have tried ripping my first DVD (Octopussy, a James Bond Movie) and used cCladDVD 2.0, FlaskMPEG (with the Panasonic MPEG plugin) and TMPGENc. The resulting rip is generally darker than the original (about 25-30% loss). It also resulted in the loss of detail in the dark areas.

1) Is this normal?
2) How can I compensate for the Brightness loss?

I assume that you're trying to make a SVCD.
All I can tell is to use some of the VirtualDub filters (like levels) and play with it a little. This should make your movie brighter.
