Hi.

I'd like to be able to rip a DVDs episode/film into one file which contains the chapter-markers and the ability to turn on/off sub titles.

Is it possible to do this with Magic DVD Ripper?
How about Handbrake?

I've been playing around with both, but can't figure it out.

Thanks.

MakeMKV can do this. It'll dump an entire title (always video, audio and sub tracks of your choice) into a Matroska file with selectable subs (using the right splitter - e.g. MPC/MPC-HC/Gabest or Haali) and will also automatically mux a chapters file to the output.

Just a small point regarding .MKVs of DVDs (whether made by the wonderful MakeMKV or some other program:

The ability to display incorporated subtitle tracks depends upon the player used...

If you intend to use the resulting file, make sure your player has the ability to first play the file and second understand the subtitles (and allow them to be selectable).

I'm planning to play my files on my Western Digital TV Live. Do you know if this will support the said MKV files, with chapters & subs-option?

I'm planning to play my files on my Western Digital TV LiveSince it sounds like you already have the equipment, simply create and test a sample file. Otherwise:

Have you checked the documentation and/or the website?

I have an older WD TV. Handbrake will definitely work. I tested H.264 and AAC as well as AC3 and Vobsub in MKV, and also H.264 and AAC with SRT in MP4. MakeMKV should also work, but the older WD TVs don't support Header Removal Compression, so if MakeMKV uses that and your WD TV doesn't support it you might have to run the file through MKVmerge again.
