I would like to be able to start watching a movie without subtitles being displayed. If I want to see the subtitles, I just press "w". Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to do this.

If I check "auto-load subtitles" the subs are displayed automatically and I have to press "w" to toggle them off.

If I uncheck "auto-load subtitles" the only way that I can find to load them once the video has started is by pressing ctrl + L and selecting the srt.

I there a way to do this either with keyboard shortcuts or by a command line switch/

Did you try the enable button - accesible when the movie is playing? Try to set it to off ( disabled ) and the subtitles should be present in the renderer but not displayed. You can assign "enable" or "reload" to some keys also.
