Hi everyone!
I'm having a heck of time bitstreaming DTS-HD from MKV's to my receiver. I've been trying tackle this for weeks now and I've definitely done my fair share (nights upon nights) of Googling for answers and attempted fixes to no avail.
I recently got into the HTPC world and was too excited when I got my blu-ray drive for Christmas. "I can now archive by blu-ray collection!!!" I told my self. So after tons of research I set out to get the best quality (video/audio) and size. I've pretty well gotten Dolby TrueHD down, it's the DTS-HD that's eluding me.
My rig description is:
Box: XPC Glamor SG33G5 barebones box
Proc: Intel Core2 Duo E8400 @ 3GHz
RAM: 2GB
Video: nVidia GT430 w/ the 260.99 drivers installed
Blu-ray Drive: LiteOn iHOS104
TV Tuner: Auvitek Sabrent USB tuner
OS: Windows 7 x86
Receiver: Insignia NS-R5101AHD-A (Rebranded Onkyo SR308)
My process for backing up my BD's is... I use DVDFab's BD Ripper. I select "To MKV". I select the video track I want. I select the DTS/HD track and ensure that the "Remove HD Audio" box is unchecked. I select the English subtitle and check "Display Forced Subpicture" box. I then select the "mkv.h264.audiocopy" profile and click "Advanced". I set the bitrate to ~10240 and "Direct Render" the subtitles. Then I click "Start". Several hours later my BD is done.
Now for playback...I'm using Gabest's splitter (I've tried Haali's and Divx) to split the MKV. I'm then using FFDShow ver 3721 for the audio filter. I ensure that all options for FFDShow video is unchecked (I'm letting Windows do the h264 decoding). For FFDShow audio, I selected libavcodec for AC3, E-AC3, TrueHD, MLP, and DTS. Then for the output section I've selected Pass-Through for Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, DTS-HD. I've unchecked "Connect as PCM first" and left "16 bit integer" as the only output format checked.
When I play an MKV (I'm using Shutter Island as a reference), the video starts playing, and my receiver does display "DTS-HD MA" audio does start playing. It's just that the audio starts to pulse. It doesn't really affect the video I don't think, the audio just pulses. It's horrendous. Dolby TrueHD doesn't have this problem, it's just the DTS-HD tracks. I've checked with graphstudio and it's using the ffdshow filter.
So, I've decided to just wait until FFDShow or Haali or Gabest release new splitters/filters and I'll try DTS-HD. In the mean time, I'd like to just play the DTS core track. So, I uncheck DTS-HD for pass-through. If I leave ffdshow to do the work as a filter, no audio is produced and my receiver shows PLII and the video jumps all over the place. If I disable passthrough for DTS and DTS-HD, and then set the DTS codec to disabled, I make a little bit of progress. Now graphstudio shows that the Microsoft Audio converter has taken over. When I play the video, DTS does get displayed on my receiver and the audio sounds fine. It's only if I jump ahead or behind (ff or rw), that the audio/video screws up. It starts to get really fast as if it's playing in 1.5x or 2x. The a/v is in sync oddly enough.
So.... my primary goal is to play DTS-HD from my MKV's but if there is something that I have to hold out for a new version to arrive, then I'd just like DTS to be bitstreamed and not decoded by ffdshow.
I've seen tons of articles and posts about MKV's and DTS-HD problems but none of which have helped me. I feel like I'm up against a wall with this and I'm hoping a second set (or several thousand sets) of eyes would help me out.
Thanks all!
