DVDD Says "Device Not Ready"

When trying to rip the movie, The Adventures of Don Juan, DVDD says "Device Not Ready (No Reference Position Found)"

What does that mean, and how can I get it to do a successful rip?


I also tried RipIt4Me and that got up to "SPTI layer available" and went no further. Why is it stuck there, and how can I get it to successfully rip the disk?

Clean the DVD or the unit.

There's a chance the DVD itself isn't 100% and the drive is having a problem reading a section of it. I have a few burners and when one drive hits a wall (and it happens occasionally) I try a different one. I had the same problem with a brand new, never been played DVD a couple of days ago. I think the third drive I tried finally acknowledged the disc existed, while the first two wouldn't.
Although to give it credit, the first drive happily locked up the whole PC while it attempted to read the disc.... ;)
