I have a question regarding using an spdif connection with 6 channel lossless audio.
I'm wondering about the advantages and disadvantages of doing a downmix to stereo pcm with a dpl II downmix with ffdshow vs encoding it to DTS 1.5 megabit with dts connect.

I'm under the impression that the downmix will sound closer to the lossless, while the DTS will preserve the discreteness of the channels better.

is this correct?

Unless you have positively top-tier audio gear, fantastic ears, and intimate familiarity with the source material, I'd be shocked if you can tell the difference between the 6 channel lossless audio and a 1.5mbps DTS or 640kbps AC3 version of it :)

Provided this is true, I'd suggest going with your DTS Connect solution, or ffdshow's 640kbps AC3 encoder, whichever sounds better to you. Downmixing can lead to problems if not handled properly on both ends.
