View Full Version : Why can't software decoders play Blu-ray?

I'm wondering, how come any software decoder, like ffmpeg, cannot play Blu-ray? They decode it fine if I first rip the video on my HDD then playback from my HDD, but not straight from the disk. DXVA works like a charm.

Of course you can, why not? You need a powerful dual-core CPU for that though if you use MPC-HC internal decoder.

The disk needs to be first authenticated then decrypted. Ffmpeg can't do any of them.

MPC-HC simply freezes and refuses to play when it tries to play Blu-ray for me, either using ffmpeg or libavcodec. I have AnyDVD HD installed (to decrypt), and it doesn't work. I have a very recent (less than 30 days old) build of ffdshow installed, and using MPC-HC 1.4 to play.

BTW, is there a free Blu-ray decrypter to use other than AnyDVD HD?

Yes I did.

This is interesting.

Any buffering setting can cripple BD playback? I notice that my BD drive's light is flashing constantly when MPC-HC is trying to play the video (using a software decoder).

Hello.
I've a similar and really dumb question - which of this players are able to play untouched BlyRay's:
1) Cyberlink PowerDVD
2) Corel WinDVD
3) Arcsoft Totalmedia Theatre
4) Splash Pro (?)
5) XBMC 10 Drahma
6) WMP (?)
7) MCP-HC (?)
8) Zoom Player (?)
9) J.River Media Center (?)
Or any other.

(?) - I'm not sure about this software abilities.
