Its normal to not use full cpu power during the first phase. Phase 1 is mostly there to gather encoding data needed to be used in phase 2. Its in phase 2 your cpu power is really used

I was wondering the samething with my amd hex core, but then i started to pick some of the higher quality settings and it started to use more\all of my cpu's power. But the FPS for encoding didn't increase and i didnt really notice a difference in the end results on my tv so i stuck with the automatic quality setting.
P.S.
it ends up finishing an encode in about the same time it stats the "Approximate Source Content" is for a full disc encode. is this on par for anyone else?

Try setting LAVF on in the SETUP dialog and see if it makes a difference.

Thats with using the LAVF setting. i also had some trouble converting bd to dvd, the audio was off by a bit. maybe i need to uninstall and reinstall AVISYNTH, FFDSHOW, and HAALI. what do you think?

I would just to be safe. But unless you are using filters or the source is interlaced, pulldown, or hybrid (or something else that forces AVISYNTH), they won't come into the picture with LAVF set.

i ran the same ripped movie again (grown ups) after uninstalling and reinstalling AVISYNTH, FFDSHOW, and HAALI, converting from bd to dvd and got the same result. the audio was off. The same rip gave me a good bd25 full disc backup. i have also converted Easy A to dvd and with that one the audio was every close to being spot on. next i'll be running dinner for schmucks to see what happens. Is there someother setting for converting to dvd that i'm missing in order for the audio to come out right?
almost forgot to mention that i tried using the different audio tracks for grown ups and all of them resulted in the audio being off about the same amount.
