View Full Version : Can BD Rebuilder be forced to NOT re-encode?

I've tried using BD RB several times to re-encode a movie but not matter how I set the quality settings it always reduces the file size by 12-14%. (Please note that I've installed the software precisely as described on the first page of this thread, using only the versions of Ffdshow, Haali Matroski Splitter, and AVISynth specified by jdobbs).

Is there any way to force BD RB to *NOT* re-encode and just strip audio stream and subtitles, like DVD Shrink? I know DVD Rebuilder can do this and was wondering if BD RB can as well.

If you are doing a BD5/9, the answer is no.
If you are doing a BD-25, then Yes. Set the MIN_M2TS_SIZE=n below options. ( see the HIDDENOPTS text in BD-RB zip )

You could also select custom size and increase it to BD50 size.

Reference the HIDDENOPTS.TXT file: Add this to the [Options] area of your INI file

FORCE_NOENCODE=1

Should the status log show that BD-RB is in "no encode" mode?

Update: I just answered my own question:p. The status log shows "Keeping original video (no reencode)"

BUT...

No luck with the file size issue. Despite what the log says I think BD-RB is reducing the file size on extras, despite having the option for "Quicker Encode for Extras" unselected. The folder for the source movie is 25.4. The output folder from BD Rebuilder is 20.5 GB. Also, setting CUSTOM_TARGET_SIZE=46900 has no effect either.

The custom size (or any of the other size options) will have no effect if you set "FORCE_NOENCODE" -- when you do that you are telling BD-RB that you don't want size controls (you can't control size if you aren't reencoding).

The size is changing because you're not keeping all the audio and/or subs. If BD-RB is telling you it is keeping the original, it is keeping the original... if you look at your times you can see that the entire "encode" cycle of all components only took about 24 minutes and that was all in the demuxing/muxing. If any reencoding were to happen, that would be considerably longer.

What I don't understand is that Win7 reports the *video* bitrates as being different between the two movie files (source is on the left). How would removing audio affect video bitrates? I know the subs can't be using up that much space. Or should I use a different tool to check video bitrates? I just want to make sure I have no quality loss in video unless I really need to (as in the case of a BD50->BD25 transfer).

I just told you they are remuxed unchanged... if "something" is reporting it as different -- than "something" is clearly wrong. I'm not going to argue this -- as it is intuitively obvious it wasn't encoded based upon your log.

The new video output is bit-for-bit identical to the original except for the muxing overhead.

I'm not trying to argue--really! I'm new to BD-RB so I don't understand all the details of the program. I'm a registered user of DVD-RB and also donated to it when it was in beta. I plan to do the same for BD-RB once I get a better grasp of things.

So please accept my sincere thanks for your help. :)

Windows video bitrate report for M2TS is faulty, most of the time is the sum of video+audio+subs, and even then is not totally reliable.

Would you know of an alternative tool that more accurately measures video m2ts bitrates?
