View Full Version : Effective dot crawl remover on fast motion

Dealing with .vob files is not easy at all, and I'm stuck at it again.
I want to rip a .mp4 from a .vob. The source is interlaced and grainy (maybe jaggy-edged, sort of, I dunno exactly what it's called)
After doing some analysing, MeGUI suggest using TITVC to deinterlace it
tfm(order=1).tdecimate(hybrid=1)
And to get rid of those dang grains, I decided to choose Convolution3D, but it seems almost unchanged

As you can see from the pics, the edges are neither clear nor smooth, but jaggy and blurry. They do annoy me a lot
I appreciate your help. :thanks:

Cut a part of the VOB for us to try.

That's dot crawl, not grain.

Oh thanks. I thought these are grains :D
Can you tell me how to remove them completely?

well, using something like qtgmc can get rid of them, though that is mainly a side effect of bob deinterlacing it does work on high motion parts though, other than that try using tcomb which can help with most dotcrawl but usually not the fast moving kind. If you are lazy just using something like bob then blendbob can help reduce a lot of the dotcrawl relatively fast.

Checkmate().

Checkmate().
Well yes checkmate does get rid of dotcrawl, just as a tank can hunt a deer.
IE Checkmate tends to look way worse than the blur you get from bobbing
but I guess he can choose which he prefers

Checkmate() seems to have no effects on my video
From among 4 plugins for dot-crawl removal, I found TComb is the best. Btw, like you have said, it's not for the "fast moving kind".
TComb(mode=2,fthreshl=4,fthreshc=5,othreshl=5,othreshc=6,map=false,scthresh=12.0)
The default settings above cannot remove completely the dot-crawl. Higher values of fthreshl and othreshl make visible change, yet introduce too much artifacts and ruin the image.
Dunno what to do, I'm going insane about this x-(

mp4guy posted a dotcrawl script here: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=152757 that you could try...

He wanted speed, not quality. And since no one had suggested it, I did. :) I'm also quite well aware of what Checkmate can and can't do with certain sources.

I still think that a good old
bob
blendbob
would be fine, if you want speed that really is pretty damn fast too
Also the problem with MP4guy's is that it basically is just a gaussian blur
a damn fancy one at that lol
not sure about the speed either

Thank you all :)
I gotta go with Checkmate again. Is the default Checkmate() that effective?
well, MeGUI suggests using TIVTC to deinterlace, could I apply another deinterlacers like Bob or QTGMC
anyway, time is not an issue to me, quality is really what i'm pursuing

checkmate bad itself. Try this:
function DeCrow(clip source)
{
out1=source.checkmate()
out2=source.checkmate(tthr2=0)
return out2.mergechroma(out1)
}
