I noticed that audio files (mp3) played with Windows Media Player don't have the same crc anymore, even though i have disabled everything from "retrieve missing informations from...".
This happens in windows 7 and on a machine with windows xp home and Media Player 10. Is there a way to avoid this beside setting all the files read only or using another player?

Use another player or try classic media player home cinema (download (http://sourceforge.net/projects/mpc-hc/files/)) that comes with k-lite codec pack. Also GOM media player is quite good. download (http://download.cnet.com/GOM-Media-Player/3000-13632_4-10551786.html)

Media Player Classic HC has an awful playlist system, plus Windows Media Player seems better to smooth the artifacts of video compression, at least with my codec configuration. Also i can use my remote control only with microsoft players...

Hi!

It looks like you're not alone:

There was known bug with Windows Media Player 12 in some Windows 7 pre-release version that corrupted MP3 files:
http://www.neowin.net/news/main/09/01/05/warning-windows-7-beta-could-corrupt-your-mp3s

Besides that, a modified CRC doesn't necessarily mean the file was actually corrupted. Maybe Windows Media Player just inserts/modifies some "tag" for whatever reason

You should make a byte-by-bye comparison between the original and the "modified" file and/or check the "modified" file with some MP3 verification tool...

(And, if you insist on using Windows Media Player but want your files to NOT be modified, try setting the "read-only" attribute. That probably helps to avoid the modification)

Yes,some players edit tags on the fly, insert artist thumbnails, covers, etc., and all this b.s..
No need to worry, except your privacy is down the hill.:p
The big brothers will monitor your media behaviour for future reference
and it is much easier for them if they use their own tags.
Dont use WMP or iTunes and your trouble is gone.

Have you also disabled the star ratings system? That might also tag files.

That's right Lord Mulder the audio stream is probably intact but the crc doesn't match and that could be a problem if you shared these files.
TinTime: are you referring to the option "keep star rating..." in the catalog options? then yes on the windows 7 system as xp with media player 9 doesn't have this option..
