Hi im using dvd2svcd to encode my dvd's to 1-3 cdrs and I was wondering if I could instead just use it to output to one big svcd file and put it on dvd-r instead. That way I wont have to change files midway through the movie and I could also use a higher bitrate to get better quatlity video. Is this possible?

This wouldn't work. When you put the DVDR into the player your machine recognises it as a dvd and would not rcognise the svcd format.
You would probably have a lot more sucsess using IfoEdit.A lot more info on this can be found in the IfoEdit forum.

There is a way to do this and I am thinking of trying it myself when I get more money. As Wh00pS said you cannot do this in your Stand Alone DVD player, but if you have the ability you can make a Home Theater PC and it will play on that. This is about the only method I know of, but it is expensive and takes some work. This is way beyond the scope of this forum. If you are interested at all take a look at this website http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/
There is a Home Theater Computer Forum with some really good info.

Hmm,
In NERO if you tell it to make a SVCD and pop in a DVDr instead of a cdr disk wont it burn it to its full length? and wont that dvdr then look like a SVCD to a hardware DVD player?
If I build a home theatre PC then I dont really care about this because the svcd can be one big file on the hrad drive or a bunch of cdr sized ones.
Im surprised no ones tried this yet. I dont want to spend $400 and get a DVDR just to find out its not possible..lol.

Hi ymee,
although i have no DVD burner i read about that issue because i did some research for a friend that aksed me the exact same question. And what i found out (from the net and some PC magazines) is that it really depends on the DVD player and especially the firmware of it.
There are some DVD players that played those SVCDs on a DVD-R medium because the firmware only analyzed the file structure and so on and there were DVD players that immediately indentified those media as a DVD and so the firmware got confused because it didn't expect a SVCD-structure on it (i hope i got it right since it was some time ago i read about that).
So i think it is possible, and i also think that in the near future there will be more DVD players that will play those "SVCDs" as the DVD burners become cheaper and people are demanding such a feature. And personally i think that almost any DVD player could be upgraded to play those SVCD by updating the firmware.
Greetings,

P.S. If i have some spare time i could try to find some of the stuff i read some weeks ago and post it here but i can't promise for sure.
