View Full Version : Mainconcept MPEG2 on newer card = black picture

Hi,

hoping this is the right forum...:

til last week I had an HD 3850 on XP-32, catalyst 10.10. I've always used the Mainconcept MPEG-2 decoder (with VMR9). It uses DXVA. Everything fine. I'd like to stick with this decoder if possible.

Now I have an HD 6850, catalyst 10.12., but using the same decoder, only a black picture is shown. The machine has been reinstalled (still XP-32). Other decoders do show a picture but they are not my first choice.

I know about DirectShow, filter graphs, etc. pretty well (I'm a programmer for some years BTW), and we don't have to discuss about installing latest drivers etc, so I just want to know if this is a "known issue". I didn't find solutions to this problem.

Well, what's different to before? Only the card and the driver; which is both still ATI. That would mean there is a limitation on new cards/drivers? I have no other explanation.

If I use it in MPC-HC, it shows "playing (DXVA)", so it does make use of DXVA, but the pictures stays black. Also with VMR7. Same in Graphedit or others (AltDVB, ProgDVB, DVBViewer...). Audio plays well and there is no error message.

Any clue? Thanks for reading, and sorry if I'm wrong here.

I figured out, if I disable hardware acceleration in the decoder settings dialog, it works. However, that's not a solution.

I also tested it on Win7-64: Same problem. Same black picture.

I tried to figure out the cause, but I failed. I've used DXVAchecker and everything seems to be fine. Everything works without an error message, but with a black output. I don't get it. I've debugged using the DX Debug Runtime (didn't know what else to try) to no avail.

I can't live with it just because of an upgrade from HD 3850 to HD 6850.

check options -> misc -> reset color controls when you play a video file.

Hi!

Have you seen the following, from the AMD webpage at:

http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalyst1012ReleaseNotes.aspx

Note:
Driver compatibility for AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series is currently available for Windows Vista® and Windows 7® only.

Hi, ha-ha, that's funny. No XP support yet. No, I didn't read that. I always read the release notes but only about the resolved issues and new features. Anyway, the problem of this thread also exists in Win7. But thanks for the hint!

(BTW, if you go on http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx and select my card and my OS, AMD offers this driver. Anyway, apart from the problem mentioned, which is not OS related, it works well also on XP.)
