MKV to DVD

Any suggestions for software to convert a 23.976 MKV to a DVD structure (preferably PAL but not essential!). Almost everything I've tried creates poor quality or a slight stutter presumably from the frame rate change. Even TMPGEnc didn't look great. Probably got closed with ConvertXtoDVD but again, PAL didn't work but the NTSC output was OK I guess.

Any ideas?

Without referring to "Best", I'd suggest that "multiAVCHD" does an excellent job...

I vaguely remember testing it for converting to DVD and always seem to have issues with it picking the correct aspect ratio? Maybe its time for a re-test!

Edit: just tested it with a couple of MKVs - it un-crops them to 720x576 (the correct DVD size) but it tries to resize to 720x364 which to me, makes the image looks squashed. Any ideas?

AVS2DVD, DVDStyler, DeVeDe and DVDFlick all do MKV to DVD ... as for "best", no idea, haven't burnt a DVD for years :P

Take a look at latest AVStoDVD releases, there is a new 'PAL SpeedUp for NTSC-film to PAL' conversions. It uses AssumeFPS(25), followed by audio resampling. The +4% AV speed up is an acceptable fee to have a very smooth encoding.

I did! Without the PAL SpeedUp it did look a little jerky. Smooth with but the sound was really slowed down! Any ideas?

Do you mean sound out of synch? Do you have the possibility to upload a portion of the mkv? Or at least post the .log file?

Now, I converted the same file in another software and got the same issue. The file plays fine on my system before conversion and I've not yet had a chance to test another MKV file but I will do tomorrow. Could it be a codec issue?

I strongly believe it is an audio codec issue. Take note that the output audio has come out with 2ch instead of 6ch. If you have installed AC3Filter setup output mixer properly, OR uninstall it and use only ffdshow (AVStoDVD takes care to adjust ffdshow mixer automatically).

As far as I know, I only have ffdshow installed. I've certainly never installed AC3Filter unless its been installed with something else. Should I force the sound to 6ch?

I suggest you to use GraphEdit to investigate the audio decoding chain.

Checked filters - only have latest ffdshow installed and re-installed that for good measure. Downloaded GraphEdit but no idea what I'm looking for. If I load the MKV it just says Microsoft DTV-DVD Audio Decoder for audio.

Do you have Window7? If yes you have to use Windows 7 Preferred Filter Tweaker to force W7 to use ffdshow. Otherwise W7 uses its own directshow filters. Nice guy, Mr. Bill, isn't he?

It is Windows 7. I ran Preferred Filter Tweaker and set all the 32bit decoders to ffdshow. Didn't work again. Not sure if I need to change anything else?

Audio encoding still slow and still being shown as 2 ch.

32bit graph edit shows ffdshow being used, 64bit doesn't. Tired disabling 64 decoders in tweaker but they keep resetting.

Maybe some other W7 users may come in help to understand how to fully use ffdshow with W7. Unfortunately I do not have W7 installed.

About your issue, you could switch to FFMpegSource to avoid the directshow approach.

Tried FFMpegSource, same issue. For now I'm going to give up unless anyone has any suggestions? When I get some time I'll have another play with my codecs.

Success! The trick was to disable the 64bit Microsoft DTV-DVD Audio decoder. Thanks for all your help! Conversion went smoothly after that :-)

I use Procoder 3 to do this. However, it doesn't like .mkv so I have found sometimes I can change the file extension to .avi and it will work when I use the DivX codec. Otherwise I convert the .mkv to .mov with Format Factory and use Procoder 3 to output VOB mpg2 dvd files for burning. It will convert rates as I am in the NTSC world so I use 2-3 pulldown to 29.97 fps and the quality is real good with a variable rate.
