Yep. Make sure you're not blocking any of the vents, and maybe spray them out with a can of compressed air. Dust bunnies are extremely treasonous.

I don't think of laptops as encoding nor gaming machines. Anyway, there are cooling solutions for laptops, you should look into them if you want to use it for encoding.

Perhaps overheating but may have other cause.
Asus Laptops seem to suffer from several shutdown type problems.
See if there is anything helpful in your event logs.
Right click "My Computer", Manage, Computer Management, System Tools, Event Viewer.
(that may not be exactly correct for W7)
see also here for shutdown during gameplay, down to W7 driver problem.

Or google on something like "laptop shutdown asus"
EDIT: Also would not do any harm to read the 1st Sticky about
SpeedFan (first few posts) and see if you can have it fail whilst
keeping tabs on it.

If you buy a laptop, the vendor must make sure that the built-in cooling solution is sufficient, even if the CPU is running at 100% load for longer periods.
So if the machine gets too hot under load, you should return the laptop to vendor as long as you still have guarantee!
Still you should check the cooler for dust first, especially if the laptop is under use for quite some time already. Checking the memory with memtest86+ is good idea too.
And of course you should check you power profile twice. Maybe try to watch the laptop until it shuts down: Does it shutdown regularly or will it suddenly switch off?
