View Full Version : no sound in AVI after virtualdubmod conversion

Hi,

I'm trying to make copies of my dvd's that I can play on my pda. I thought AVI with Xvid video and AC3 audio would be a good choice.

So what I do:

I open the VOB file with virtualdubmod and choose file>save as...
In video processing i choose full processingmode and change to select Xvid (for the time being single pass, when I get the audio sorted out i'd like to try double pass)
select AVI format (it's the default format) choose a file name, and "save"
When I check the streams dialog, I see one AC3 stream a button "disable" to the right (that means it's currently enabled, right?) and when I right click on the stream it says "direct stream copy" which is what I want so I don't change anything.

When I play the resulting AVI file (on my pc with windows mediaplayer) I here nothing (yes I checked my pc sound is on)

With "demux" i can produce an AC3 file which is perfectly playable in wmp.

When I open the AVI file (so the output of the conversion, not the original VOB) I see two AC3 streams. When I save those with demux, they are also perfectly playable.

:search: I did try to search on "no sound"
:readfaq: I did read the faq
And i didn't find an answer.

can someone help me please?
Thanks!:thanks:

Load the .AVI into GSpot and post a screen capture back here.(or two, one that shows video info and a second showing audio info)...

Thanks for reacting.

"GSpot"?

I'd have to ask my good friend Google what that is, or probably it's here on the forum.

I'll be back.

edit: ah,... I see

Interestingly the video tool comes up in Google before biology-related results!

Hi, Is this what you meant?

New developments:
I tried out the file anyway on my PDA, it's an axim x51v with TCPMP player. I here the sound fine over there, but there's another problem: With my settings a typical film of approx. 4 GB in VOB turns out to be around 6 AVI's of around 220 each.
I encode the individual VOBS one by one , because handling very big files is somewhat unpractical. I tried a couple of films.

Now the sound of the first VOB's is fine, but there's a noticeable delay (~1 sec) in the sound in the other files. You have any ideay why?
:thanks:

I've got to say, your workflow makes no sense, so a screenshot isn't going to help fix it. Why not use one of the many GUIs out there that simplify the process enormously, rather than incorrectly using a 6-year-old hack that makes broken streams even when you use it right? There's a whole forum full of them, with a sticky thread listing the major ones.

The reason why the sound is delayed is that Vdubmod doesn't compensate for audio offsets. If you were to concatenate all of the VOBs first, you'd get roughly correct sound all the way through, as long as the first audio sample was aligned with the first video frame.

^Agreed.

@kuifje_doom9
Try Auto Gordian Knot (AutoGK) - it's suppose to be pretty easy to get to grips with for a beginner (although, I haven't actually ever used it myself).

Ok, thanks for the advice, i'll try it out. You know, there are so many of these tools out there, I wasn't going to try them all out, and I saw a lot of positive comments so i thought... why not.

But if you say autoGK is better... i'll certainly try it out!

I'll be back!
:thanks:
