hi
I am ripping dvd;s with smart ripper,dvd2avi and then tmpgenc.
On the final mpeg replay the picture is slightly jerky.
The picture quality and audio are perfect.
I was given some settings from the vcdhelp forum but these only
made it worse.
any ideas.
could it be the settings in dvd2avi.

I'm the one that probably give you those settings for tmpgenc.

Do you have the jerky playback on a burned disc or do you have it with a software player?

I have come across software players that will not correctly play a perfectly encoded vobs or m2v without problems. ATI file player for one. Sometimes it won't even play at all.

Next question, did you do a preview of the movie in DVD2avi and if so, in the statistics window what did you see for film type?

When you ripped the movie did it have angles in it?

Version 2.5 of TMPGEnc supposedly auto-selects the field order, by the way...

There's one other which is a likely culprit. If you go from NTSC to PAL without considering the frame rate differences. E.g. 23.976fps to 25fps. If you leave it up to TMPGEnc your motion will become jerky. Check it using Vdub and step forward frame by frame. You will then likely find that every X of frames is repeated causing this jerkyness to occur. This is offcourse only obvious in motion parts.

Something else just occured to me - if you are encoding interlacedmaterial (by that, I mean if your OUTPUT is interlaced), then Windows Media Player will play it back jerkily. Before you (perhaps) "waste" time, trying out new encodes, I suggest you rapidly author an ultra-basic DVD, just in order to create VOBs from your MPEG encodes. In this way, the files will be played back using VOB filters, which treate interlaced material correctly - in other words, you may find that there's actually nothing wrong with your exisitng encodes after all!!
