The future of video compression?

Anyone have visions how much compression potential there can be beyond x264 for example? How much more processor power better compressions could demand? When we will hit the wall and why?

The amount of compression in the future will likely be correlated with increased/increasing resolution and/or color depth...

I think looking at the evolution of audio compression is a good indicator of what's in store for video: as processing power increases, the compression will likely focus on psycho-visual masking, trying to increasingly get closer to how the human eye perceives details.
Also means that things are likely to get more messy and less interesting...
