It sounds like for some reason AutoGK is over-cropping the video really badly, which is somewhat unusual. What sort of video are you converting?

Try using Ctrl+F9 to open the hidden options. Tick the "tune autocrop parameters" box and change the threshold value to zero (you need to do it after loading the file you're trying to convert). Hit okay and then use the preview function to see what the uncropped version will look like.
If that's more realistic you can then fiddle with the autocrop parameters again if there's still back bars which need to be cropped. You can adjust the threshold if you like or change the number of frames for AutoGK to examine when deciding what to crop etc, but if AutoGK isn't getting the cropping right I tend to leave it on zero and adjust the cropping manually (use the four boxes under "forced cropping"). I tend to take a guess, use the preview function, then take another guess and use the preview function again etc until I get it right.

If you want to compare your adjustments, just leave the preview video open each time, make an adjustment and then preview it again.
