I have quite new Samsung SH-S223C drive. It had SB04 FW. I used ODD Firmware LiveUpdate and it said new FW available. So i updated to SB05. Today when about to burn audio-cd, i noticed the drive wont work with blank dics- cd or dvds. It says that disc needs to be formated etc. Thats not normal. And BurnAware wont work with those discs. The drive opens discs with data in them though. Did FW update mess up my drive some how? Is it possible to restore/install previous version of the FW?

Things i have tried to solve the problem: Uninstall the drive from Device manger, then reboot-no joy. Uninstalled clonevirtualdrive- no joy.

Edit. Hmm. I think blank DVDr's works with burning software as normal. But CD-r's i have (verbatim) wont work with burning software (freezez the software) until formating them.

Why dont you just switch back to the former SB204?
For veryfying it's a firmware failure..?
It's all @ the Samsung Website.
I have flashed a many Samsungs (and other brands too).
And didn't you back up your older firmware.
I dont know about "Live Update" but their should be a backup function.

Mmmh, best to move it to the "Dvd burning" forum thread...

If you select Audio CD as the type of CD to burn does it still complain about needing to format the disc?
DVDs are still working okay?

Chances are the drive is okay but Windows or the burning software is now confused and thinks CDs are DVD-RAM discs instead of standard data audio CDs.
Try a different brand of CDs. Maybe the firmware update stopped it playing well with your discs for some reason. I have a Pioneer burner which wouldn't burn to Verbatim discs for a while, until a firmware update fixed it.
Do you have any packet writing software installed and which version of Windows are you running? If you do have paclet writing software installed (such as InCD) with Nero, try uninstalling it.

If all else fails, here's you're old firmware (assuming Samsung let you upgrade backwards).SB04 (http://www.firmwarehq.com/download_1668-file_SH-S223C_SB04.exe.html)

I guess it was softwares fault all together. I installed CDBurnerXP and it seems to work better.

Edit. Ok, so this my current PC is quite new. Didn't remember that i haven't actually burned any CD-Rs with this new PC until i tried with BurnAware. So most likely the problem was there even before doing any FW updating. And yeah, after SB05 i downgraded to 04, and the problem still was there. So it was a BURNING SOFT PROBLEM. BurnAware clearly had problems with (at least) Verbatim CDs). I have Windows 7. CDBurnerXP seems to work. Now i have patched back to SB05.

And i suppose it's normal after all with this my drive to ask format a blank disc. Anyway, there's no need to browse blank discs :)

The drive won't be asking to format a blank disc.
There's software on your PC examining the discs and asking you the question. If you could post details of which program is doing the asking it might help to fix it.

I've not used either of the programs you're using so I'm only guessing but it seems like there's something between your burning software and the drive examining the discs and it bothers one program but not the other.
A bit of a Google found this:
Live File System (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_File_System)
"The Live File System option is used by default by AutoPlay when formatting/erasing a CD/DVD -R or -RW."

So are you sure it's not just Windows Autoplay popping up to ask you if you want to format CDs? Nothing like this?
Take advantage of Vista's Live File System optical disc format (http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/window-on-windows/?p=536)

It sounds like it might be Autoplay asking to format the disc and you should be able to just say no, or turn the horrible Autoplay function off completely. I think it is possible for software to intercept Autoplay dialogues and make the decision for you so maybe if you've had the software running while inserting the CD CDBurnerXP has cancelled the message while the other program hasn't. Or maybe CDBurnerXP changed the Autoplay settings when you installed it. Did you try BurnAware again after installing CDBurnerXP?

I guess it's also possible BurnAware has an option to tell it how to handle different types of discs and it's set to write to CDs differently to DVDs, and you only need to change the option, but given the problem has only surfaced on your new PC it sounds like it's Windows once again making your life harder as it attempts to make your life easier. I've not used Win7 much so I don't know for sure.

You got what you asked for. Lots of people search google for the best burning software and usually make the wrong decision.

Formatting a blank disk is required by packet-writing software, like InCd or similar. Sometimes the windows wants to do this too, should the burner support MountRainier. Disable as told the windows burning support.

I never hard in my life that a software doesn't support a certain brand of CDRs, such incompatibilities exist only between the burner and the disk. The way you worded the last sentence made many people think that your burner has problems with Verbatims only, which I assume is not correct, because you have only Verbatims. So check the second paragraph for packet writers and/or mount rainier.

Ok heres the messages i get:

At first it says: "Disc in the drive F: needs to be formated before using it." "Do you want to format it now?" Options: Format - Cancel. http://www.imgplace.com/viewimg87/8453/70format.jpg

Then if i hit Cancel, it says: "Windows can't read the disc...". "Make sure the disc uses a format supported by Windows. If the disc is not formated, it need to be formated before using it." http://www.imgplace.com/viewimg230/6400/57format2.jpg

If i hit Format, it says: "How do you want to use the disc?" Options are: Like USB-stick or with CD/DVD drive. http://www.imgplace.com/viewimg148/4421/66format3.jpg

Oh, and AutoPlay is disabled.

Sorry I don't understand Finnish...
But it seems it's the windows burning function, just stop it.

I don't know where the message is coming from if it's not AutoPlay, but after you've cancelled it and windows has finished complaining about it, can your burning software still use the drive and disc to burn another type of CD such as an audio CD?
