Trying to reinstall AvsEdit 1.1.1.3 on an new machine, I get 'please install .NET framework 1.1 first'. OS is XP Sp3, the machine has .NET 4.0, and up to now I thought those frameworks were cumulative. Do I need to install 1.1 after all? Help most appreciated.

Well, some are, and some are not. IMO Microsoft did a lousy job with the different .net framework versions.
This is the current situation to the best of my knowledge:
Versions 1.1 and 2.0 are NOT cumulative. If your app needs 1.1, but you have only 2.0 installed, this will not work. But luckily those versions can and should be installed together.
Starting with version 3.0 up to 3.5 they are cumulative. If you install version 3.5 on a computer which never had any older version installed, you will end up with framework versions 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 all installed in parallel.
But with the current version 4.0 Microsoft changed the rules again. Just installing 4.0 and nothing else will not support older apps which require versions before 4.0.
In your case you must either install version 1.1, or to be safe for other apps just install version 3.5 on top of 4.0.
Cheers
