View Full Version : Demux MKV invalid video size

Whenever I demux a video that is an MKV and contains a DTS track, for some reason the video seems to end up being longer than it's supposed to be. For example,

- use MediaInfo on an MKV and shows 2 hours 22 minutes.
- use MKVExtractGUI or a couple others and the DTS file is 2 hours 22 minutes.
- Video ends up being a H264 file that is 2 hours 55 minutes.
- Open video in Expression Encoder Pro 4 and shows 2 hours 55 minutes.
- Encode video, end up with 2 hours 55 minutes and the last 33 minutes are black. In Encoder though before you encode it shows 2 hours 55 minutes of content.

Anyone know what's going on here? Is this a VBR issue and if so how do I fix this? Do I just encode and the chop off the 33 minutes of blackspace? Also if so, what is the best way to get rid of / chop off the 33 minutes of black space at the end?

Thanks.

Is the source VFR?

Did you mean VBR? If not, clarify VFR. I am not sure how to tell if the MKV is variable. Just says bitrate: 10400. Not sure if that's min, max, average, or CBR.

Thanks.

VFR = variable framerate
Are the demuxed video and audio in sync if you remux them? If so, you can probably just cut off the last 33 minutes. You can cut the raw .264 file using DGAVCIndex if Expression Encoder does not allow cutting.

That's the damndest thing. In Expression Encoder when you go to the end of the video it's the ending credits. So 2 hours 55 minutes of all video. Encode to WMV-HD and it's 2 hours 22 minutes of video and 33 minutes of black. You don't see the black until after you re-encode it yet you got this extra 33 minutes of pure video showing in Encoder that isn't really there before encoding.

Guess I may have to take this to another computer with more codec and tools and see what the original H264 file is doing. Don't like to corrupt this computer with unnecesary codec and tools. I do know I tried putting CoreAVC codec in and it did the same thing within Encoder.

Funny thing is MS says you can't load an H.264 file as it's not a container and they can only load containers. Of course there is a H.264 decoder listed in their out of the box codec pack that comes with the tool. And it does open it and does convert it, just have those oddities.

You don't have to install anything for DGAVCIndex. Just download (http://www.videohelp.com/download/dgavcdec109.zip), extract and start dgavcindex.exe. Open the .h264 file and mark the range you want to keep with the brackets (start = [ , end = ]), then click "File" > "Save Project and Demux Video".

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a try and report back. The odd part about this is in Expression there is video all the way thru the 2 hours and 55 minutes. When I encode it that's when it shortens to it's real length plus a bunch of black space at the end. Will be interested to see in the H264 file itself if I cut it before putting into Expression if it will retain the original video and nothing will be cut off.
