View Full Version : Best 1:1 Ripping Method? (DVD9)

All:

I'm not completely a newbie, but its been quite some time since I've been here. Back in the day I had done a ton of backups with the "Big Three" method from this site and was very familiar with it. Lately, I've been dabbling more in Blu-Ray, but have a renewed interest in DVD9 given some movies are not out on Blu-Ray yet. Here is what I would like to do:

Take both my Single Layer and Dual Layer DVDs and Rip them into a digital file that my media player software on my HTPC can play (it will play ISO files). However, I'd like the following caveats:

1) I do not want to compress/re-encode the video or audio files.
2) I want to be able to strip out the extras.
3) I do not want menu structure. I'd prefer to click on the file and it plays the movie in its original 480p format.

I remember dabbling with IFOedit and Blank VOB (along with DVD Decrypter) to remove extras from a DVD. It was a long time ago, but I know somewhere on this site there is a guide for that.

However, I do not think that process makes me able to meet my final desire for removing menu structure, and being left with just a playable file.

What is the best way to accomplish this?

Thanks!

If the DVD is older, DVD Decrypter in IFO Mode. If a newer DVD with newer copy protection, DVDFab HD Decrypter in Main Movie mode. If you need an ISO, make one afterwards using IMGTool or somesuch.

Really, DVD Shrink is perfect for this. Choose 'reauthor' mode, change compression to 'none' and remove unwanted audio/subs. You'll get a nice ISO containing just the main movie and no menu.

Note: Like DVD Decrypter this won't work for newer protection schemes, although you could probably run ANYDVD under DVD Shrink.

please dont ask what's best (as per forum rules).
AnyDVD + DVD Shrink will do what you want BUT AnyDVD is PAYWARE. An alternative to AnyDVD is DVDFab Pass Key for DVD (still payware).
So if it's ok for you to spend some money for AnyDVD then that solution is very good. If you want free softwares you may want to look at DVD Fab Pass Key Lite that offers standard decryption but doesnt support advanced protection schenes (like arccos, ripguard, etc).
Or you may want DVD Fab HD Decrypter (that only removes protections and rip the disc) then use DVD Shrink to do the remaining stuff.
You may also want to try DVD43 that does basically the same as AnyDVD, it's free and BUT not as reliable and doesnt support all protection schemes.
There are plenty of other solutions too...

Hi!

If your media player setup is capable of playing .MKVs, you can simply use MakeMKV to (in one step) rip and convert your DVDs to "movie-only" .MKV files...

Yes, I second what setarip_old suggests. Matroska ripping and remuxing through MakeMKV will present less overhead than MPEG-PS (VOB), will allow you to avoid bothering with any esoteric PUO stripping or menu editing, and will allow you to copy only the main movie and remove titles and main movie streams you don't want.
