This may be a stupid question but how do you think Avisynth can compare to commercial tools such as Genuine Fractal for upscaling/restoring images. Some people claim it's the absolute best tool for this kind of job, why not, but I'm pretty sure Avisynth can compete.

I found an old thread (http://forum.doom9.org/archive/index.php/t-151714.html) where people talked about it briefly but there was no actual comparison between the two.

Perhaps we could pick a source frame and if somebody owns Genuine Fractal we could do a comparison between its output versus the ouput of avisynth tools ?

I doubt any tool of any sort, "fractal" or not, will even come close to beating NNEDI3.

I have no experience with GF myself but I assume it operates on static images only -> one can obviously wait 10-15 seconds to get perfectly upscaled/restored image, OTOH no sane person would be willing to spend 480-720 hours to get a 2-hour movie perfectly upscaled/restored ;)

If it's a rare movie and a "collector's item", someone might care enough. Just look at how many people are seeding old movies/games torrents...

More importantly, many algorithms designed solely for still images aren't stable in motion... (e.g. see seam carving)
