View Full Version : Windows 7 64-bit w/ 1.28.2 Pro, no preview?

Hey, all.

I just added a new partition to my system for Win 7. Installed 64-bit Ultimate, all available updates, installed 1.28.2 Pro of DVD-RB, and no other updates.

I use HC Encoder primarily. Rip with DVDFab 8. I have a dual Xeon 3.8GHz HP workstation, so I have my threads set to 4 executions of HC, exactly as my Win XP setup is running on the same machine. I am using HC 0.23 on XP and on Win7 for the time being (as I see 0.25 is now available, and I don't want to mix that in with the current problems). AVISynth is the standard build DVD-RB installs, as well (2.5.6.0).

In three-click mode, I can run a Prepare, but when I go to check the Preview, I get a weird "error: something something mpeg2source" in red type on all screens, nothing plays.

I've checked my rebuilder.ini file in both OS installs. The one in Win7 correctly points to the Program Files (x86) folder for everything. I'm running as an admin user (for now, just to get the system set up), but I've set DVD-RB to run as administrator, didn't make a bit of difference.

I just moved the work temp dir to the /Users/Public/Public Videos/DVDTEMP folder, no difference.

EDIT: I switched to QuEnc temporarily, and instead of the red-lettered warning, I now get just black, no playback, and the "scrub bar" doesn't move. Switched back to HC, re-prepared, and still black. So I can't get the red message back at all, but Preview is definitely not working. But no errors anywhere.

Any ideas on what options I should try switching around? I don't want to mess with it too much, as it's always just worked in XP with all of the default settings.

Oh, and yes, I did do a full uninstall, removed any leftover folders, and reinstalled from scratch.

TIA, Dan.

That's an indicator that something is wrong in AVISYNTH. I'd recommend you uninstall and reinstall it. It would help if you could write down exactly what error you are seeing when you try to preview it back and report it.

Thanks for the quick reply. When I uninstalled DVD-RB, I also uninstalled AVISynth, then deleted both leftover folders in /Program Files (x86), and reinstalled DVD-RB, which alerted me that AVISynth wasn't installed, then went ahead and installed it.

After starting up DVD-RB, I set up my preferred defaults for HC and subtitle/language removal (but all paths were pointing where they needed to). I ran a prepare against a new RIP, which I was able to play with PowerDVD (the VIDEO_TS folder, that is). Again Preview was not working, but this time no error was superimposed on the preview, just black.

No errors in Windows logs, nor in the rebuilder.log files... and of course I never did write the error down, though when I saw it I was able to Google for it and found others saying it was a misconfigured AVISynth (though not directly related with DVD-RB).

Try turning OFF Win7 UAC

Personally I found it a pain in the butt. Any decent virus checker will do a better job

Alsdo, I have found the newer virus checkers with huristics like blocking HC running correctly as its called from within DVD-RB so they usually wrongly think its a virus trying to run itself

If you can, and have software that has this 'feature' set up HC on the softwares 'whitelist' or 'allowed software to run' lists. They are usually buried unhelpfully in the settings somewhere

Try reinstalling DVD-RB after uninstalling AviSynth (again), but let DVD-RB install it as it should auto-detect its not installed and install for you. This fixes quite a few weird errors

I run DVD-RB with HC on Win7 Ultimate and once I had told my virus scanner to allow HC as 'safe' software had no more issues. But did get weird errors until I reinstalled DVD-RB and AviSynth

I run AviSynth 2.5.8 and HC Enc 0.25 with zero issues now, although I can't run multiple copies of HC Enc (thats my virus software issues) but I'm happy with it running one instance of an average of about 120-150FPS (without any AviSynth filters)

Never had a problem with it in Windows 7 at work, though Vista was a PITA. I'll try anything once, though running DVD-RB as admin should take care of any issues with UAC...

EDIT: Turned UAC off, rebooted, tried again, same issues.

Added both AVISynth and DVD-RB folders to the whitelist in Microsoft Security Essentials, cleared my 'work path' temp folder for DVD-RB, ran Prepare again, still black preview.

I'm thinking I'll try to install HC 0.25, then if that doesn't work I'll update AVISynth. At this point, I can't delete my XP partition for fear I can't use DVD-RB Pro, and that would be a serious loss.

Thanks, all!

Well, that didn't work. I uninstalled AVISynth, ran a Prepare in DVD-RB, and as expected the status log showed AVISYNTH UNKNOWN. I then installed AVISynth 2.5.8, re-ran the Prepare, status showed 2.5.8 running, but the preview was still black, no error.

What I HAVEN'T even bothered to try is going ahead with a Rebuild. I'll try that, see if the encoders are working correctly on the backend. If a conversion finishes, where should I concentrate my sleuthing?

Well, a complete Rebuild works fine. I simply can't use Preview. I know it has something to do with mpeg2source being the culprit, but because all I see now in Preview is a black screen with no cursor movement, I can't do much Google-ing. Something along the lines of "There is no function named mpeg2source" (which I do see some entries for on Google, but nothing helpful for my instance)...

EDIT: This sounds like my issue, but my setup is definitely pointing to the right folder in Program Files (x86):

http://boardreader.com/thread/No_Function_Named_mpeg2source_8p1X3a9y.html DVD Rebuilder uses the Microsoft Media Controller Interface (MCI) to play segments. If some other application has replaced one or more of the .DLLs it may make it stop working. You may want to check in the system32 folder and see if you are using the standard version of winmm.dll.

The version on both of my Win7 (32 bit and 64 bit) machines is: 6.1.7600.16385

No guarantee that's it, though, as the error you're getting doesn't seem to jive with an MCI issue.

jdobbs, thanks again for your insight.

I have the same version you have of the winmm.dll file, in both System32 and SysWOW64 folders (I think I mentioned using 64-bit Ultimate).

The thing which bugs me most is that, after the first install I was receiving the red error message in my Preview window. Switching from HC to QuEnc and re-running the Preview caused the window to only show black, and switching back, as well as uninstalling DVD-RB/AVISynth and re-installing, as well as upgrading AVISynth, all continue to show a black Preview screen. No matter what I do, I cannot get that red message to come back. Very odd.

I even went so far as to drag-n-drop my XP version of the DVD-RB install folder to my 7 install, fix the pointers in the Setup, and it still failed to show.

The only thing I can think of is that it's something I've added to Windows 7 since installing. I've installed the basics, Firefox, Foxit PDF Reader, 7-Zip, Microsoft Security Essentials, as well as the K-Lite codec pack, iTunes, Steam, and of course DVDFab 8.0.3.2... all things I have on my 32-bit XP install.

Thanks again for your help, all. :thanks:

K-Lite Codec Pack would be the most likely candidate.

SUCCESS!!!

I removed the K-Lite Codec Pack, ran CCleaner on the registry to tidy up, uninstalled AVISynth, then DVD-RB. Rebooted, then re-installed DVD-RB (it installed AVISynth for me), and with some normal tweaks in setup, Preview now works!

Sorry I didn't just try removing K-Lite package and trying everything again, but I'm all about the sledgehammer approach after a week or so of trying to get this to work.

Thanks much, jdobbs! Can't wait to get a Blu-Ray burner so I can upgrade your software. People are always amazed when they see my DVD-5s after running them through DVD-RB. :thanks:
