I've been trying to interpolate some footage from inside of a furnace using adobe and msu motion interpolators, but all i get is warping on the walls. I'm familiar with the fact that current tech can only interpolate certain things, is fire one of them?

fire interpolates very poorly ; only things with linear , predictable motion tend to produce usable results

Sounds like one would have to shoot in highspeed to use interpolation, kinda like its more expensive being poor than rich. Oh well.

I found Fire being interpolated not too bad,
BUT the surrounding objects like (you mentioned) walls etc. may be harmed by the interpolater due to the changes in brightness.
Maybe you could mask them out?

Have you got a sample to play with?

Yeah, it's the brightness changes that are interpolated as motion. Try either a highpass'ed searchclip, or the various "DCT" modes of MAnalyse. It can work out for such specific scenes ... however, it is more like a hotfix for a specific case, not a "general" solution.

The problem is that no algorithm searches for "motion", because electronic circuits have no idea what motion really is. All they do is to search for something that is "most similar" to something other. That's all. "Motion" is something else.
