As most of you know, YouTube has a DRM system in place that looks for patterns in the audio or video itself. There is Cinavia, yes, I know, but it looks specifically for a hidden mark in the audio.
What I want to ask is whether Blu-Ray/DVD player manufacturers are looking at DRM that looks for patterns in the content itself. Is the company doing the YouTube DRM trying to force their wares onto Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, etc? It seems it would be trivial for a tabletop Blu-Ray player to simply monitor the video or audio, do pattern analysis as it goes, and the player continuously consults a table stored in ROM that has millions of pattern-match values for various movies, songs, and so forth.
Of course this means basically all "backups" we've ever burned and even home camcorder movies with popular songs playing in the background would be DRM flagged and playback would cease. YouTube is already doing this, so it seems it's just a matter of time before we find that Sony sticks something like this in one of their 15-gigabyte PS3 updates.
