I'm trying to encode some videos to be able to play on Nokia phone, which has Real Player. It uses .mp4 files with aac lc audio and mpeg-4 video codecs. Bundled converter gives out terrible quality, So I tried x264 with setting main and base profiles, but phone won't play them and I don't know why.

Here's the info of video that bundled software converted from source (and plays fine on the phone):
ID : 1
Format : MPEG-4 Visual
Format profile : Simple@L1
Format settings, BVOP : No
Format settings, QPel : No
Format settings, GMC : No warppoints
Format settings, Matrix : Default (H.263)
Codec ID : 20
Duration : 3mn 7s
Bit rate mode : Variable
Bit rate : 1 198 Kbps
Width : 640 pixels
Height : 360 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 16:9
Frame rate mode : Constant
Frame rate : 30.000 fps
Color space : YUV
Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0
Bit depth : 8 bits
Scan type : Progressive
Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.173
Stream size : 26.7 MiB (95%)
Writing library : Lavc51.40.4

And here is the info of video that phone records from it's camera (and can play of course :-)_

Any ideas of how can i make x264 to produce compatible videos?

simple@L1 is MPEG-4 ASP... not AVC.
also playback capabilities depends on the phone model.

There's no way if your phone's player only supports MPEG-4 Visual (MPEG-4 Part 2) and not H.264 (MPEG-4 Part 10).

Which phone is it? Maybe there is an alternative player available.

@Sharktooth
Ok, if simple@L1 means that it is ASP, i'll try some xvid 2-pass, but what about Simple@L4a? (second clip)?

@nm
It is nokia 5800, Yes there are alternative players for it, (like SmartMovie) and others and those can play most formats as is, But they are very slow, because they rely on processor only, while Realplayer(that comes with the phone) uses some sort of hardware acceleration. Other players that I tried play mpeg-4 asp (avi) 640x360@25-30 fps pretty slow, with dropped frames.
That's why I try to make best of this Real player.

simple@L4a is still ASP, simple profile, level 4a.

the Nokia 5800 has an ARM11 processor. With the latest firmware it should be clocked at 427 Mhz.
It should be able to play full PAL or NTSC res mpeg-4 ASP streams with no problems and AVC baseline streams too . however it depends on the player used...
Try CorePlayer.

Yes, I know about Core Player. I used it for years on my old palm T3, I would happily buy it but unfortunately it doesn't work on Symbian S60 V5 phones at all. On palm platform it is the only player capable of playing SD videos.

This sounds like a good application for Xvid or other MPEG-4 (A)SP encoders...
