I like to store my movie backups in a book with sleeves. I understand BD-R's are supposed to be stored in a hardcase, that sleeves might scratch them. How true is this?

If it is true, where is a good place to get transparent BD-R cases?

The BDRs are advertised to be harder than the DVDRs. If one treats them carefully they won't get any scratches (I still have DVDRs of 8 years without a scratch, so it's possible). I would tend to use hardcases, even for BDRs.

Yeah, you'd have a hard scratching a Blu-ray in a sleeve... But keep in mind the protective coating on a Blu-ray disc is very slightly malleable (I think that's the right word). If anything (even a piece of paper) is physically touching the disc surface, and any pressure is applied to the disc for a period of time, the texture of the paper will be pressed into the disc surface, making it unreadable...

If you remove the disc and just sit it out, play side up, it will eventually fix itself, so it's not permanent damage (and this be sped up with a hair dryer, but carefully!), but it's annoying if you want to watch it right away and it won't play.

This applies to BD-R and replicated store-bought discs.

Just store them in a way that's not applying pressure to them (i.e., don't stack them like magazines, but stand them up-right like you would books on a shelf). I have mine in a drawer made to hold discs, so there's no pressure applied to them. Stuffing them in a binder probably isn't a good idea either, since that applies some pressure to the discs...

(Again, the process is reversible, just kind of annoying...)
