Hi,

Im a bit of noob, and was hoping for some advice on aspect ratios.

Im trying to encode some comedy dvds in xvid, but something doesnt seem right about the aspect ratio. The people seem very slightly too thin, and the picture looks generally 'wrong', its difficult to explain.

Is that just an xvid limitation? does x264 have this problem?

How are you making these XviDs? What programs? Your best bet as a beginner is to use AutoGK to create the AVIs. It doesn't make AR mistakes. An educated guess says you're keeping them the same original resolution of 720x480/576. Which is fine if you set a PAR flag. But you'll probably want to resize them. Like I said, let AutoGK do the dirty work for you. Read this:

Manono,

Im making the xvids with froggys linux script 'xvidenc', which uses mencoder, I am keeping the original resolution of 720x576.

Having made some samples using the default resolution settings in xvidenc, I watch them and the people seem very very slightly thin, which makes my eyes feel 'weird' (its difficult to explain, but something is wrong).

Detected Aspect Ratio = 1.3333:1
Storage Aspect Ratio = 1.2500:1
Pixel Aspect Ratio = 1.0666:1

However this morning I made some other samples and changed the default input video aspect ratio to 4:3, and they *seem* to be better, my eyes do not feel 'weird' when I watch them.

Apologies for my ignorance, my brain doesnt work in the same detail.
