I would however strongly suggest eBay only if you couldn't find a new one in the "physical" shops. At least in Germany, the goods sold through eBay are more expensive than those sold through regular channels and/or online shops (because people tend to think that eBay is cheaper and some do not check the prices).

Unless an internal replacement is necessary, perhaps consider an internal 5.25 SATA drive installed in an external optical drive enclosure.

or this SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 adapter:

Thanks to everyone that sent replies. I did in the end find a shop that sells Sony parts.

Just for info. Sony will NOT sell parts to us, the end user. The Sony Centre I had purchased the Laptop from (2 years) ago could not help. No other Sony Centre either. All they could do was to give me numbers to ring.

Everywhere I phoned from the numbers given to me wanted to charge me £79.00 just to look at the machine even though I did not want a repair as I was willing to pay for a new optical drive.

The drive as you know just slides out, its like changing a battery.

So I likened it to that senario and I said to each of them, are you telling me that if I had rang to get a new Sony battery you would charge me £79.00 to look at the machine first they all said yes.

That says it all for Sony. Toshiba are completly the opposite, they fall over themselves to help.

I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER SONY PRODUCT AGAIN

So to conclude the story, I found a shop that has exploited this fundamental flaw in Sony's wonderfull customer relations, they buy Sony laptops in bulk, break them up in their new condition and sell the parts seperatly to us the people that actually matter.
