View Full Version : Croping video without reencoding

I have this video, at 1920x1080, but there are columns on both sides, about 60 pixels thick each. Is it possible to crop them without reencoding?

I already tried the crop function on mkvtoolnix, but it didn't work, I don't know if I used it properly.

Hi!Is it possible to crop them without reencoding? No (Unless something has changed radically very recently)...

And what about a (very) fast reencoding, able to maintain the quality?

1920x1080 is 16:9 ratio DAR (Display Aspect Ratio) so why dont you just select a true 16:9 screen mode instead of a non 16:9 screen mode to display it on.

then it wont have these side bars auto inserted to keep the right DAR ratio, No re-encoding or cropping required as that is what its supposed to be displayed in.

Not that I'm trying to speak for Guilherme, but I can't quite make sense of your post - no offence!

It sounds from the original post like the black bars are hard coded in the video - not a result of playback. It could be a bad resize up from 720x576 (which could "legally" have slim black bars, but that's not quite enough to explain 60 pixels)

The only thing I can think of (and it's not an ideal solution, as it assumes you're playing back on something like VLC) is to alter the DAR/PAR of the MKV, then crop on playback to a 16:9 frame (this is also assuming that the current DAR/PAR is wrong because of the black pixels).

A sample would have helped here ....

It could easily be a 1.66:1 movie (of which there are hundreds), hence the 120 or so pixel columns of black. If so, nothing's wrong; nothing has to be changed.

I'm not sure why the need to crop and reencode, though. The black pixels use almost none of the available bits and reencoding degrades the quality, no matter how slightly. If the idea is to not see any black on a widescreen TV set then that's just silly.

What movie is it?
