Go back to your Source DVD and start over. Filter that and not the reencoded AVI.

I don't have the dvd source but it's legal because this movie is int he public domain. Anyway the DVD is as bad as this avi, it's a crappy port. Can I do something to make this video better?

Unless it's one with the same name...that happens from time to time.

Perhaps Ghitulescu means that it will be in the public domain,
next year.

I purchased the Diamond Entertainment version of "One Eyed Jacks" for $2.00 (new) a couple of years ago. My research at that time (I wanted to make sure it wasn't a bootleg) disclosed that this title is indicated to be in the public domain, likely the result of the owner failing to renew the copyright of this 1961 release after the (then) initial 28 years:
Published from 1923 - 63 When published with notice3 28 years + could be renewed for 47 years, now extended by 20 years for a total renewal of 67 years. If not so renewed, now in public domain
There are versions available from 4 or 5 low-end publishers...

One Eyed Jacks is in the PUBLIC DOMAIN. OP is correct in that regard.

You're right, for the US, which adhered to Bern Convention only in 1989.

The problem is that these DVDs are not real DVDs, they are crappy ports from VHS , the quality is as awful as my preview pic, they never remastered the movie probably because of the copyright issue.

What filters you can use for tweaking a little more quality out depends ... it would be nice to see a sample, so that the temporal stability can be better estimated.

From the still-picture i would suggest decent sharpener like LSF/LSFMOD/SeeSaw and probably a decent denoiser. But it really depends on the -moving- pictures.

Please post a little sample - there are several VHS Issues like Chromashifts/bleedings/Interlacing and so on...

I am sure you can get the movie a littlebit (subjective) better than the source.
