View Full Version : BD-RB DVD-5 can't play on Philips BDP5110/F7

Hey jdobbs and everyone on here. I just bought this bluray dvd player because it is the only player on the market that I found can play divx as well as mkv and other high def format for less than $200. I tried my first encode of a blu-ray full BD-50 content to DVD-5 using the latest BD-RB and got no errors, but when I tried to play it all I get is the black screen.

The dvd-5 i used to burn it is memorex and I used Nero in UDF mode to burn the two folders that BD-RB outputted. Am I doing something wrong here?

Also I read through a couple of threads that say to check the strict AVCHD option in DVD-RB... should I do that if I do a full back up or is that only for "movies only"?

Full backups on DVD-5 media poses a problem to many players.
You have to try what your player accepts.
On a DVD-5 medium I would start with the simplest version: Movie only and perhaps with strict AVCHD selected.
Then you may want to try a full backup on a DVD-9 or higher.

What does strict AVCHD mean? Does anyone on here have a Philips BDP-5110/F7 that works with full back up on a DVD-5?

I've found that the best compatibility across the board comes from using the strict AVCHD option, with a movie only copy, made to a DVD9 disc. These play on every standalone player and PS3 that I've tried them on...

Yes I found that work too but I want to know how to keep the fancy menu and all the other links, and possibly the extras because it's always nice to know behind the scenes stuff. Hopefully jdobbs will find a way to do that with BD-RB and release a final version soon!

If you really want to keep all that stuff, the only way of being relatively certain its going to work is to use BD-R 25 media. There are so many players, using so many different specifications, that you just can't assume a full copy to DVD9 or DVD5 is going to work. The fact is that more often than not, it won't work. Fortunately, the cost of BD-R 25 media has dropped to be only slightly more than that of DL DVD media.

I'm not trying to build a library of copies. I only want a backup that can be destroyed instead of putting the original into the hands of others who don't care about my movies as much as I do. If I want to see the extras, I just use the original.

thank you for your input gapony. For BD25 it still cost a lot more than the DVD9. I got a 50 pack DVD9 for only 28 shipped while I can't afford BD25 :( Also I would need a new burner as well! There has to be a way to allow BD9 with menu and only the movies .... Do you know how to do that?

The problem isn't in copying the full movie to a DVD9 disc. That's as easy as making the correct choices in BD-RB setup and options. The problem is in having a player that will play the disc. So do, some don't.... its as simple as that. If your player doesn't work, you can either buy a different player, or use a different technique as I described. You can't make an incompatible player work, just by wishing it so.

BTW... your burning software must use UDF 2.5 to meet the Blu-Ray specification. Maybe ImgBurn would be a better choice than Nero.

I did use imgburn to burn with UDF 2.5 :) My player should be compatible because it did read it, it just got stuck at the menu screen and it show black with my player displaying "menu" on the little display screen on the player itself. Also I know that the issue is with the pointers in multiAVCHD because after I got the dvd encoded, I tried to playback using powerdvd10 and vlc and neither reads it correctly displaying the menu.

I get more confused every time you make a post. the issue is with the pointers in multiAVCHD Huh? You never mentioned anything about the fact that this wasn't a factory Blu-Ray.

I get the distinct impression you're yanking my chain. At the very least you are not very forthcoming with important details. :confused:

Sorry jdobbs... I am just putting everything as I see it, perhaps I should be more organized... But what I have been telling you is exactly what happened. After I did an encode after using multiavchd to blank out ads and extras and trailers I get that "warning" then when I burned it to a dvd+r to put into my bluray player it detected it but when it comes to the menu, the screen showed black with the bluray player display the word "MENU" and I can't do anything else.

Perhaps you could take this disc that won't play on your Philips BDP-5110/F7 to a local retailer that has other Blu-ray players available on display, and test that disc in different players. This will certainly help confirm the compatibility of your disc with these other players.
I have two Sony players, and full backups to BD5/9 play back perfectly, unless the original disc has PiP. ( A known Sony issue ).

Post processing your BD-RB backup with multiAVCHD is done at your own discretion, and you cannot expect jdobbs to answer to that process or reply as to what is done outside of his software!
BD-RB works as is, and until you get more reliable results I would suggest testing to DVD+RW or DVD+R/DVD-R media as to avoid more expensive DVD+R DL media coasters. ;)

@xterminater

Hi!

Perhaps I've overlooked it, but nowhere in this thread can I find the title of your original, commercial Blu-ray disc.

What is the title, studio, and region? (If the studio is perchance Universal, you'll [in your mind's eye] see a lot of smiling members ;>})

capsbackup... what model is your sony bluray player? I picked this philips model because it can play divx as well as x264 mkv with subtitles in it! Most sony I don't think can do that. Unless your model can then it's great!

@xterminater

Please be good enough to answer my question, to wit:

What is the title, studio, and region of your original, commercial Blu-ray disc?

@xterminater
One cannot have all, why would anyone buy say a Denon for 1500$ if a 200$ Philips plays everything? It's all compromise, quality, price, features.
Use search and you'll find a list of players that are compatible with BD-RB, don't ask questions for something you should do yourself very easily.
Besides, if you also want answers then give answers too..........

setarip... the bluray is Red Cliff international version part 1 and 2 from Magnolia Home Entertainment... the rip was done using ANYDVD HD, Disabled BD-Live, Removed Region Code A. That Denon is obviously out of the line for playing blu-ray contents and Denon are considered high end home audio plus not a lot of people have that much money to spend. I see a list of compatible bluray but so far only and sony are able to play full back up only?!?!

As I posted recently in the compatible players thread, my new Samsung 5900 seems even better than my Sonys regarding compatibility, but I've only tried a handful of bd-9s so far but 100% success to date.

Just posting what I put in the compatibilty thread, which really does need closing and starting again:

"For Information:

Samsung 5900 3D player

bd-5/bd-9/bd-25/bd-re all fine in full disc backup mode (handles multi-branching titles and Universal audios which cause problems on Sonys).
avi/mp4/divx/mkv (including HD version) - all okay from disc or usb
internet tv "

Other than that movies only work perfectly? Only on Sony and only when secondary (Picture in Picture) audio is present... the problem is with the Sony, not BD-RB.

I haven't done anything except burn the bd-rb output straight to disc.

##Just checked Robin Hood, which is the last disc I did and which I actually checked from beginning to end and the Auxdata directory is still there.
