View Full Version : Proper playback of TS files (1080i)

Hello.

I have some TS files that are 1080i. For some reason I cannot find a player/codec/filter combination that gives me proper playback for these. Some TS files play too fast, others stop playback after some seconds.

My current setup is:
-MPC regular and HomeCinema version, tried both
-ffdshow
-Haali Media Splitter

I'd appreciate if you could share your playback setup with me for these kind of files. I do not have a single problem with progressive files and files other than TS files.

Thanks :)

Hi chapas,

Can you provide a mediainfo dump from an example of these 1080i files?

A few other questions

1) What versions of MPC-HC and ffdshow-tryouts are you using?
2) Which TS splitter are you using? I alternate between Haali and the internal MPC-HC splitter for various reasons.
3) Where are these TS files from?

As much as I actually dislike it as a media player, VLC has a nice tendency to work around all sorts of bizarre, pathological content. Do try a recent build of that :)

I.M.non-xpert.O., "MpegSplitter.ax" is better for transport streams than Haali ---
--- in most cases, at least. :) Anyway, as Blue_MiSfit pointed out, there are various types of TSs, many of which, even though compliant to the specs, are not well "swallowed" by this or by that splitter. Yesterday, for example, I messed around with an "exotic" TS generated by the Manzanita muxer --- MPlayer displayed the video excellently, whereas MPC-HC didn't. OTOH, the MPC-HC splitter accepted a program stream (.MPG) with H.264 video produced by MainConcept Reference, but the same file was rejected by MPlayer.

Hi sirs. Thanks for the replies! I have dumped the info with mediainfo as requested. I also notice with almost all the TS files I have that they contain video glitches, probably from the capture process?

I wonder if there's a way without reencoding to remux the audio and video stream to a better container. I notice TS is not very streaming friendly. I could not play most of the TS files from a Windows share at 100mbit/s ethernet connection to my HTPC. Thanks :)

I tried demuxing the streams with tsMuxer, and remux them as MKV with MKVtoolnix, and it takes care of deinterlacing and uses DXVA hardware acceleration! :) I'll do the same for the rest of my streams. I'm still open to all advice!

TS files(MPEG-TS, m2ts) work fine in MPC-HC as long as i tick the internal MPEG PS/TS/PVA filter. Seeking is a little bit "brutal" though.
TS files also work fine with Splash Player Pro . Seeking is much more smoother.

Last version of MPC-HC (internal MPEG PS/TS/PVA splitter & audio decoders) & DTV-DVD Video Decoder cause internal H264/AVC decoder still has some problems with i files

Advice: make sure you reset MPC-HC settings before you try it again

Thank you edigee and Mercury_22!

I'll update my build of MPC-HC and try again.

OK, a couple of minutes ago, I gave a try to the ArcSoft Mpeg Splitter ( ArcDemux.ax 1.0.2.73 ), and yes, seeking is very-easy with it. :) :) :) Only con ( so far... :o ) is, it doesn't connect to other decoders than the ones from ArcSoft itself. HTH.

I've been playing all kinds of TS files on MPC-HC for years now without any problems.
Well, there are some problematic ones, though, if you're using Haali Media Splitter. Some also like to stutter if you're using the DXVA decoder for H264. I'm using the internal MPC-HC filters for everything.

The best solution for film based TS files (at 30i) is this modded dscaler decoder, which will do IVTC:

You can also try using eac3to to remuxing to MKV.
