new to sony avchd need advice

HiGuys !I have been around on forum reading before i was working with regular dv camcorder and convert them to dvd ,but upgraded to a sony hd avc camcorder making mts files .I have got to the point to merge them together but what should i do with the file to store it on dvd disc (4.5 gig) ,what is the best to archiving them .I have tried to convert them smaller mkv files and deintarlace them so i can store about an hour video on a regular dvd disc.If i have the mts file that is only 20 min on 4 gig with the HD FH mode on my camera ,or just set it to lower setting on my camera ?i have like 4 settings on it HD FX what do 24 mb/s than HD FH is 17 mb/s HD HQ is 9 M and the lowest is HD LP 5 m .I do not have blue ray at this time so i just want to archive them and watch from my pc hooked up to the lcd tv.Thanks!

Always encode at the highest bitrate! (24Mbps). Real time encoders buildin camcorders are not very efficient. With x264 you can easly put 1.5h-2h on single layer DVD. Use RipBot264.

What should be the settings in ripbot to get the this result .On the 24m settings in the camcorder 8 gig 45 min.

If all you want is archiving then why don't you burn files directly to DVD discs? Any recompression will only decrease overall quality of your video.
If you want to cut and merge files try Avidemux in copy mode - it will split files on keyframes keeping all details as they came from camcoder.

If you want to make video-DVD compartible to hardware players it's another story, but from your first port it seems you don't care about disc format, just want compartibility with your own computer and keep as much quality as you can... Think about possibility of future processing/editing your videos archived on DVDs.

i make a lot of movie from my kids and i want to burn as much minute on the disc as i can .I am not too picky on quality i just want the best compression i am just looking for the possibilities i can to do because i do not know anything about hd movies yet .What i did so far i recorded in highest quality and coded with ripbot to mkv with deinterlacing .I just want to make sure that is the best for me.

Panasonic sells an add-on burner to its AVCHD camcorders, something WV-BN1 - for less than 200€ (I assume one quarter in China) you can have all the videos automatically on DVDRs.

Shoot at maximal bitrate in camcoder and then process it through ripbot to recompress it with x264. If you want to reduce video size just reduce bitrate in ripbot video encoding settings (2 pass mode is preffered in this case). Try 6, 8, 10, 14M and make a choice depending on acceptable quality. Acceptable quality level is individual for everyone, so noone but you can judge it. Also you can turn on denoise to increase compressibility.
I really doubt deinterlacing is a valid choice here. If you want progressive scan video, shoot in 1080p modes so you won't need deinterlacing later. From what I found for your camcoder it supports 1080p.
