has anyone else had this problem? i am getting lots of blocks with an sd interlaced anime source when i have 7 or more ref frames value.
i tried the same thing with a non-anime 1080p source and there was no problems.

what decoder/player are you using?
is it using DXVA?
did you de-interlace or are you encoding intelaced?

1. ffdshow w/ windows media player 12
2. not using dxva as far as i know. the other vids i have break dxva compliancy and they play just fine so i'm guessing no dxva.
3. i tried both de-interlace and interlace and the problem persists
the blocks only happen when i choose 7 or more ref frames. i can change the value of anything else and so long as i stay at 6 or less ref frames the vid turns out fine.
i dont have any other sources right now other than the 1080p so i cant really do much testing on this.

try another player (VLC or MPC-HC for example). AFAIK WMP uses the microsoft decoder for AVC.

ok you're right it plays just fine in vlc. what i don't understand is why this file won't play correctly in wmp but another file plays just fine even though both used the same profile when encoded.

Sounds like you have an ATI video card.
