View Full Version : Problems converting VHS into DVD

I have bought a Toshiba RDXV49DTKF Combo DVD to convert all my old VHS tapes into DVD.
I have copied some of them, but an error appears in some others, it says 'It can't be copied, the content is copyrighted'. How can this be possible?? What I am trying to copy are concerts or programs that I recorded from TV some years ago, so they can't be copyrighted.
Any idea about what it's going on or what to do to solve the problem???
Thanks a lot in advance

Analog Macrovision protection ... most DVD recorders will refuse to copy anything with a Macrovision signal encoded ...
PS. If the show were broadcast, they are still covered by copyright ...

Never use a combi to copy. See below why.
In this case, Macrovision is embedded in the VBI (near Teletext, CC and the like). Practically any DVD recorder should detect the Macrovision bits in the VBI and refuse to record.
So use a TBC in between (make sure it blanks the VBI - you'll loose the Teletext/CC too), that means you need a separate VCR and a separate DVD-Recorder.
PS: Yes, 7ekno is right, anyone can claim copyright for her/his work and anything is copyrighted "by default".

You need a 'Copy Decoder'. Try amazon.co.uk (B000FDAKY8) to sit between you VHS and DVD recorder. Get then on ebay, online or your local eletronics shop

I've never heard of Macrovision being transmitted 'over the airwaves'. If that was the case, surely the VHS recording would've been corrupted?
Although broadcast shows are covered by copyright, there's no problem as long as the recording is for personal use.
