everytime I convert a film from XDIV to divX , I notice that the final avi has lost some of its contrast and appears a little pailer than the XDIV , why is this and how do I fix so that the contrast is maintained ? Im using Virtualdub latest .

Hi!

How do you make a comparison?

First, it's Xvid (DivX reversed with a lower-case "d").:)

Second, sounds like the levels are getting screwed up (maybe PC.709 to TV.609?)

Try using the levels filter and setting the input limits to 16,235 and the outputs to 0,255 (IIRC that is correct for those conversions).

I'd suggest to check levels first and then make proper conversion. From my experience Xvid produces correct full range encoding.
