View Full Version : I can't use stereo (2 channels) audio in Virtualdub (Windows 7)

I always use Virtualdub to hardsub my videos. I use x264 codec for video, Textsub filter for subtitles and 2 or 3 channel AC3 or MP3 for audio.
When I upgraded my Windows to Windows 7 , I had a problem with audio. After I load a movie (using avs script, as usual, to load mp4 video) and go to Audio > Compression , I find that most of the formats are not available. For example, when I click on Lame MP3 or MPEG Layer-3 , I don't find anything. This image explains what I mean:

The real problem is that AC3 filter becomes only available in 5.1 or 6 channels which produces a completely messed up audio. Please check this:

I only need a 2 or 3 channel audio.

I tried to mark "Show all formats" and select stereo (or anything actually), I just get this message:

Note: using Direct stream copy doesn't work properly with Virtualdub.
I also tried to run Virtualdub in the compatibility mode, but it didn't work.
I always run Virtualdub with administrator rights.

I did that stuff a lot on XP and Vista, but I don't know why I have this problem on Windows 7
I'm using Windows 7 (64-bit) and Virtualdub (32-bit).

Please help...

Are you sure the audio source of your video is in proper format? For example, 44100Hz or 48000Hz in Stereo.

My personal experience, If LAME show nothing that means your audio not compatible with LAME, or Windows 7 really sucks that broken LAME's ACM.

I did fansubs work also, since many hardware works better with MKV (DivX plus), I'm changing to X264 (2 Pass) + Nero AAC, and mux with MMG (MKVToolnix), since MKV is great container, can put more than one subtitle (with compression) into one container.

Sorry not exactly help you to solve the problem.

Thanks. I know that MKV is a great container and I can use MKVToolnix without problems, I add the video and subtitles and attach fonts... etc.
But sometimes I need to Hardsub subtitles (not all computers can play 720p videos), and that problem bothers me a lot. I don't want to downgrade to Vista because of such problem.
Anyway, I face that problem with all mp4 videos I have.
Here is the audio info of the RAW of the latest video I translated (Cat Shit One):

Another example is "Fairy Tail" anime (I stopped translating it already). I used to use Leopard-raws or Zero-raws. I got that problem with Windows 7 as well although everything was running smoothly on Vista.

If anything works fine under XP or Vista but not 7, Microsoft must be changing something AGAIN!

1) Consider a soft-sub, e.g. Aegisub, and mux into MKV
2) Use VirtualBox, stupid but it works
3) Use another PC, I capture with a old PC and encode in a faster one
