Make a DVD Video + HD photos

Hi guys, I've some stuff like 1,5GB already authored video (with menus, etc) and 2GB of pics I reduced to 1920pixel width. The idea is to make only one DVD which putted in a HDMI DVD reader could display on an HD TV the video and pictures (like putting a normal dvd rom and browse the pictures).

At this moment I just put the video on VIDEO_TS folder and FOTOS folder in the root, and the result is that it's like a normal DVD video where photos are ignored by the reader (unless there is a reader around that could "switch" to DVD-ROM standard reading and let me browse the FOTOS foder).

Is it possibile to find a workaround? The target is to visualize that pictures with every reader, in PAL output if it's a normal TV and HD if it is connected via HDMI. I guess that's the normal way a reader works while in DVD-ROM mode.

It's not a solution to convert the pictures into a movie, not even in HD video.

It could me maybe possibile to introduce in the menu a script that will point to the jpg files and let the reader open them.

The target playback device is an DVD standalone-player with HDMI output, but not a known brand/model? If this is the case, I don't think you'll be able to find a way to format your data that does what you're asking on most players, let alone all players. I'm sure there are some DVD players with HDMI out that don't even allow HD-jpg slideshows at all. And of those that do, I'm fairly sure some will see your VIDEO_TS folder and then ignore all other files on the disc. Some will probably allow you to play the disc as a regular DVD-video and/or browse the jpg files, and of the ones that will, some will output the jpg files in HD while others won't.

I think what you're attempting to do might be easier using either BDMV format (Blu-ray), or even AVCHD.

The answer is no. There's no way for a player (and for a DVD command) to find out whether the connected TV is HD capable or not. Simply because the DVD standard was established before a common HDTV agreement was secured. It may however find out whether the display mode is 4:3 or 16:9 (not the TV itself).

The HDMI extension arrived well after the DVD standard was established, and only to allow the DVD players to upscale themselves the SD video to 1080i/p. Not to play native HD videos.

The only way of combining the two is to create a DVD-Extra (DVD-video with a DVD-ROM part) and let your player access the -ROM part like any other non-video content (on Pioneer players it's the Media button or menu choice). But it's not universal. Besides it's possible to have the images reduced to SD. For the same reason as the above §.

Even if one creates a HD movie out of those pictures (slide show), it still cannot be played on a DVD player, one needs a BD player.

From what I learned it is excluded to create a script to access an area outside the VIDEO_TS and even if I do it will keep the PAL DVD resolution.

The only solution is to let the reader access the rom part, and by its FW manage the jpg like a "computer" do. Well, it's interesting how to make a DVD extra, I've an old version of nero (6.6) and it seams doesn't support this feature (I can just select UDF/ISO but I guess it's completely different format). What sofware u suggest me to burn EXTRA mode? I would try with my DVD-RW so I could make experiments.

Actually it's not important the brand, I'm helping my mum as she's a teacher in a primary school and another teacher colect videos and pictures but they don't know how to distribute this to all the kid's parents.
I would create a DVD readable (as video) for all readers but give the chance to the most advanced readers to see jpgs on the root.

Simply, burn 2 DVDRs, one with video (as DVD-video) and one with photos (like any normal Data-DVD or DVD-ROM), for each parent.

that's what I'm trying to avoid. You got experience with DVD Extra, which softw do u suggest me to use to try with it?

You'll be nevertheless forced to burn a pair of DVDRs once the parents will come back and say that they cannot watch the DVD on their TV :p (depending on the hardware/gear they have).

I repeat myself, HD photos can only be watched in HD form by a HD player (be it the TV set itself), rarely by a DVDplayer with HDMI.

Burn one DVD, and tell them to put it into a PC and explore the DVD disc to see the HQ photos. Also add the photos to the regular DVD section as a regular DVD slideshow for those without PCs.

I know :) but some people are buying now bluray systems and they should be able to display pics in HD format.. and by the way.. that DVD is a nice memory of the school kids, they'll display in future and I guess everybody will have HD TV + bluray system (and HDMI connection).

So by now the only solution seams to build a DVD video and park the pictures in an exernal folder, hoping that blyray can switch in ROM mode and look for other resurces..

Or convert the DVD into mpg2 movie and burn a ROM.. but all chapters and Menu will gone :|

Grosso modo, the BD is backwards compatible with DVD video, why just don't create an AVCHD/BD5 disk instead? But you have to supply/buy them the parents each one a bluray player. :p
