change from nrg to iso

In the beginning there was Nero and subsequently nrg format. As time went on so did the devolpment of media players. The media player that I have will play iso's (along with a multitude of other formats), direct from the HDD, but will not playback nrg.:eek:
The first HDD has 5 iso's the rest are nrg. The best way, please, to convert them from nrg to iso's. The HDD's are full so if necassary/needed, will convert/send to a new hard drive and use old HDD as follow thru HDD for the next one.:thanks:

If simply changing the extender doesn't do it for you, I've got to believe that the conversion can be accomplished using ISOBuster.

It's been a loooong time, but I seem to recall that good ol' DVD Decrypter could be set to accept and create ISO, IMG, and NRG files - Should, therefore, also be available under IMGBurn...

Advice 1: rerip your originals. (it would take probably as much time as a conversion, provided no bootlenecks with the DVD drive)
Advice 2: never use proprietary formats
Advice 3: use the media player that supported the NRG

The good old friend google lists hundreds of such converters, but beware, the older NRG file format is not the newer, so expect some troubles if the original disk had some "issues".

In 2005 Nero was the up & coming thing to allow you to do pretty much what you wanted or needed.
Before posting I was kinda hoping that I coulda kinda right clicked on the nrg image and there was a program that would presto convert from nrg to iso.
After posting I got to thinking about it and decided thatimage burn should be able to do what I need. So this morning when I got up I sent the 5 iso's to another drive to give me room. I then opened image burn and proceeded to convert from nrg to iso, ( a little over 2 min apiece). deleted the nrg as I went along to give me continuing space. Going to be a long process but I do want to thank image burn creators for building in the prompts, a really big help.

The media player that I just got was the only one that I could find that will allow playback from an internal Sata HDD. That is why I got it; slide in and play.

After posting I got to thinking about it and decided that image burn should be able to do what I need.Are you referring to "IMGBurn" as I suggested, or some other program?

ImgBurn, simply brain freeze with so much going on. Have been using it pretty esclusively for over a year now, but been using it pretty much for standard copies, hadn't did alot of exploring into it; didn't have the need to go outside the norm, till now.

Have downloaded and installed. The difference between this and ImgBurn is: This one takes almost 3 times longer; this one automatically places the title from the source into the target block; this one upon completion, for the two movies that I used it on, has 1GB less than the nrg whereas ImgBurn is the same.
Am only going to use it on these 2 movies on this HDD untill I get to see the end result, but will probably stick with ImgBurn.

Well I guess i did it right this time, unless somebody is really really good. Went thru the Hdd; 5 were already iso so they were recognized by the media player, the other 69 were not.
Converted 67 with ImgBurn - 2 with nrg2iso: saved the 2 nrg on the HDD as both iso and nrg.
Put the HDD in the media player, chose movies and it said that there was in fact 74 movies, but as you scroll thru the list it says that the ones that were converted are invalid files and will not play them. It will of course play the 5 iso's. Take the HDD out of the media player pop it back into the PC and open VLC media player. It will of course playback the 5 original iso's and the 2 nrg's, but will not open the other ones converted with both ImgBurn and/or nrg2iso. It displays the following for all the converted ones.

It says that I have 69 iso's that can't be played, unless there is a life saver out there who knows where I have might have a wrong setting or something.

Either way this media player has to go, slow,slow,slow, to scroll thru the list.

Unless your ISOs are of standard DVDs, it sounds like you're using an older version of VLC that didn't support VC-1 (HD) video...

Have you tried either of my other suggestions, to wit:

And from still further back in my memory banks - Doesn't NERO have the ability to accept an NRG file for input and "burn" (to hard drive) in .ISO format?

I apparantly have embarked on a quest. Out of curiosity I mounted one of the converted iso's by ImgBurn to Virtual CloneDrive; once mounted it opened showing that it was an nrg. evan tho it says .iso. I tried to mount one of the two iso's converted by nrg2iso and it would not mount to Virtual CloneDrive, however it is one of the 2 that I saved the original nrg.

VLC was just updated earlier to the latest version when I first opened it, and yes they are standard dvd's.

It would appear that all ImgBurn did was change the extender from nrg to iso and the nero icon to a virtual clonedrive icon, but it is still a nero image.

I will download ISOBuster and try it on the two remaining nrg files and see what happens.

As to the last question, I will have to see what I can and can't do with the images that I have as the extender has been changed by image burn on the outside, and not sure what nero can and can't do as I haven't used it for 2 or 3 years now.

Going thru the different options under ImgBurn it looks like that it is possible that I didn't check all the options that I needed to. Going to go back and try to reconvert with the new options checked.

Have downloaded and installed ISO Buster, free version. This is what is confirmed; when I open M drive it shows all the movies as iso with a Virtual CloneDrive icon. When I open it in ISOBuster it is shown still as a nrg. I can't see where ISOBuster will convert or is that in the paid version.

From what I can find in Nero v8 is that it will convert audio files, couldn't find any video conversion in this version.

It would appear that all ImgBurn did was change the extender from nrg to iso and the nero icon to a virtual clonedrive icon, but it is still a nero image.Sounds like you've made an .ISO image file of an .NRG image file, rather than making an .ISO image file of the file contained IN the .NRG image file.

If ISOBuster doesn't do the trick, mount one of the NRG files in VirtualCloneDrive (if it accepts that format), rightclick on the virtual drive, extract all of the files to another drive - and then use IMGBurn to create an .ISO image file...

In these 2 days spent on searching various ways of converting NRG to ISO you could have already reripped at least 30 of your originals in ISO :).

Nero NRG is a proprietary format and it's very likely that most "converters" will never be able to convert it perfectly, this depending of course whether the disk has or not structural protection & co.

The path ultimately taken was not the most direct, fraught with many divertions, but ultimately was most rewarding. This venture, not by choice, ended up not about time but about learning. This was accomplishec, not by choice.

I learned that ImgBurn does not truely convert from nrg to iso, evan tho it goes thru the process of doing so and says that it did. Also that nrg2iso does not work, at least it didn't for me on these images.

Thank you for the link, but prior to returning to this site I had already deleted the images on the hard drive and am in the process of reimageing from the dvd,s, that way there is no question about the quality of the images and they will play in the media player; actually it now browses like it would be expected to. I guess looking for the image file and it not being there was what was slowing it down.

Maybe will try the program you linked to on a couple of images on the next drive.

Of course ImgBurn doesn't truely convert from NRG to ISO, there's no 'convert' function/feature!

Personally, what I'd have done is mount the NRG in DAEMON Tools (which supports NRG properly as they got the file format from Nero back when they made the Nero virtual drive) and then just use 'Read' mode in ImgBurn to create a fresh ISO image from the virtual drive.

Have never had the need for daemon tools, so was unaware of what the possibilities were for the program. Will download and try on next HDD.
That is what I'm looking for if it will do the job properly, effeciently and timely. Haven't looked at the other HDD's yet to see how many has more nrg on them. Can't remember when I stopped using Nero.

:thanks: Downloaded and installed Daemon Tools Lite. Mounted couple of nrg's, imaged and uninstalled HDD from PC, mounted in media player; they not only showed up but they also played just fine. Couple of steps involved as you know; have to remember to change format to iso instead of default,but great tool if you didn't have access to the dvd again.
