Editing a single VOB file to excise video?

I'm new here, so I hope I'm not completely messing up posting this in general. I've already done several searches but came up with nothing. It didn't seem to fit the other forums, but maybe I'm wrong.

I'm no expert with video, but I'm fairly handy. I've come upon a problem I don't have a clue about.

I have a DVD9 rip, VOB files.

Now in my limited experience the 'behind the scenes' and 'extra features' have been in their own folder. So when I'm loading up to encode to DVD with ConvertXtoDVD or the like, I just remove those VOB files and encode the main movie and subtitle streams to an ISO to burn with Imgburn. Easy peasy. Done it many times.

THIS setup has the large ~1 gig VOBS where the main film is, but on the last one, the main film ends about half way through and then you have a blue screen and it starts directly in to a 40 minute bonus feature. Just right in the middle of the ~1 gig VOB. I want to excise that bonus feature out and then encode only the film, as I could maintain the full bitrate on a DVD5 if I do so. I have no idea how to do this.

What software? Brief summation of concepts to cut that video out?

As an alternative to the suggestion by "neuron2", you could simply use good ol' DVD Decrypter in "File Mode" and in "Settings">>"File Mode" select "Main Movie + IFOs"...

Okay I've gotten this and it will obviously do what I want, I just can't find a how-to on the steps. I've found some guides, but none of them address what I'm looking to do.

Demuxing is new to me. Do I take the one VOB file in question, described above, and demux all video and audio streams? Then what? What is the demuxed file? A separate Mpeg and audio file?

How exactly do I cut this 1 gig VOB file at the ~440 meg mark? So that the bonus feature is excised and only the main movie is left?

Does the "Bonus" play along with the main movie? I mean one hits PLAY MOVIE and see both?

Because if not, then there are several from very easy to medium ways of accomplishing this.

Let's try the blanking function of vobedit or pgcedit, as the first easy representant. If you don't care about menus, why don't you use dvdshrink.

I'm guessing English is a second language for you, but I'm following you.

Be specific with your suggestions with menu link like "file>open>X" or the like when you suggest something so I cna follow you. Yes this VOB file is contiguous. From within the DVD menu it does not auto play, no. But if you play the vob file itself in VLC, for instance, it plays straight through.

What is 'blanking function' specifically? There is no 'blank' button or selection from the edit menu. Do you mean just highlight and delete from 440 on down? Be specific please.

I'm working on a duplicate file of course, so if I mess up a few times it's cool. This is a skill I'd like to have down, as I have another DVD9 on the way down now that I will want to do the same thing with.

I know the VOB file is contiguous. All the videos within one VTS belong to the same VOB (set).

I think this thread should be moved to newbies ... so the [possible] helper would know to adjust the degree of difficulty of the answer accordingly.

Not even the DVDs of a series are all equal, not to mention various DVDs from various sources. You didn't provide any information concerning the DVD, not even whether the extra plays together with the main feature. This is extremely important to understand how the DVD was made - and therefore the possible solutions.

Use search on this forum, use google, read the instructions on how to perform blanking with one or the other tool I mentioned (maybe how the authoring function of dvdshrink works), read some related stickies .... there is some work you have to do it yourself too.

Before getting all huffy, can't you simply answer the important question that has been posed to you twice now?

"whether the extra plays together with the main feature"

I.e., if you start playing the main feature and then do nothing else, does the extra start playing after the main feature?

I'm not huffy man. I just find elitism to be lame. I happen to be a network engineer and system administrator. I've built statewide ISPs over fiber optics, and administrated and configured every aspect of such. There is literally not a single tiny aspect of the internet and transferring information across it that I don't know like the back of my hand. As well as computers, routers, switches, various Windows/UNIX operating systems, browsers, and etc. But if I'm on the forums I post on, and someone asks a basic question or has a problem? Someone who might not even be very savvy with Windows even? I give specific, helpful instructions, or I don't post in the thread. The LAST thing I would do is go in such a thread and post "reset your TCP/IP memory image, reset your sockets catalog management, and then run an SFC'. Now that might be the appropriate solution, but that person is not going to have even a hint of a clue what I'm referring to, much less how to do it. You follow? Now maybe doing so would make me feel really superior and knowledgeable or something if I was petty, and I could also be condescending if I was a jackass, but since I'm not those things, I would either stay out of such a thread if I didn't have the time or inclination to be helpful, or be helpful and specific if I chose to post in it. But if you play the vob file itself in VLC, for instance, it plays straight through." That's as complete an answer as I can come up with. Maybe I could add to that to elucidate it further? If I load the initial DVD menu in VLC, lets say, to be very specific - by clicking the IFO VIDEO_TS file, which is about 14k in size - and choose 'play movie' from the menu, the movie plays, then it returns to the 'special features' menu after the movie itself completes playing. It does not auto play the 40 minute bonus feature automatically that way. Is that a little more clear? So what I want to do is excise that bonus feature, as I described above.

To also be clear and specific: I have no DVD of this, I did not rip this from the DVD, it is an untouched, bit for bit rip off of a DVD9 in the form of VOB files. That's what I have. I want to ditch the menu's, the special features, the warnings, all of it, and just get the movie itself and the sub streams. As I said I've had little problem doing that several times before. This particular case is just new to me. I normally deal with MKV/X.264 rips and the like as I prefer them to DVDRs.

I thought this would be covered somewhere, I was kind of surprised I couldn't find info. I did quite a bit of searching on a few forums similar to this one, google searches, etc, before I asked here. I couldn't find anything, or a guide, dealing with this specific issue anywhere. I felt sure it was out there somewhere, but searching for it came up snake eyes. At the time I did not know the lingo was "blanking", I bet that's a big reason I crapped out when searching. ;)

Thanks for the link, that's actually useful and specific. Would you suggest I go that route instead of using the program you first suggested? I've now checked in Vobedit and I find nothing that looks like a 'blanking' function in it, maybe I'm missing something though.
